I remember it well. I was born in 1956. In Utah up through the early 70's at least, pierced ears were frowned upon.

I didn't live in Utah, and the Church was, even then, just a bit broader in scope than Utah.

Plenty of woman (including my mother), wore earrings in the Bellevue, Washington ward we attended. Also in San Diego throughout the seventies.

Shirt color doesn't matter (unless you're a deacon or teacher passing the sacrament). Among those who attend, it's who consistently won't accept callings, speak, teach, pray, or do hometeaching.

I remember it well. To this day I'm still not sure my mom has ever had her ears pierced. She had clip-ons, but wasn't pierced when I was growing up. And it wasn't just a matter of preference. It was viewed as something Mormon girls just didn't do. Thankfully, that was just in my family due to their Mormon surroundings. My wife's family grew up in a different state, and they didn't have a problem with it. I still remember the very minor scandal it caused for my mom when my wife had my daughter's ears pierced when she was still an infant.

My good friend recently posted a photo of his boys all in white shirts and ties at the sacrament table. Instantly, I commented that they look like "cute little businessmen".
