Good night, Chap.

And for another week, good night, MDB.

Mortal Man wrote:...on whether or not I should accept a calling as Gospel Doctrine teacher.

The Sunday before GC, one of the Bishop's counselors pulled me into a classroom after church and asked me to be the new Ward Gospel Doctrine teacher. I'd be alternating Sundays with the current teacher.

I couldn't help but but laugh when he offered the job. I had wondered on the way in if the SCMC had finally found the man behind Mortal Man. For a moment I thought, WWCD (What would consiglieri do?). Then I told him I couldn't stick to the manual. He went on for a bit about how good I'd be, trying to talk me into it, to which I replied, "No, I mean I REALLY couldn't stick to the manual!" Of course, he didn't get what I was saying, so I just told him I'd think about it.

What do y'all think?

Hi MM,

I haven't read through the entire thread so I apologize if I'm repeating something someone else has said.

My advice is to turn it down. Fortunately I am in a situation where I can tell my Bishop persona struggles/doubtsl. He can then make the decision whether he wants me to teach or speak in sacrament etc.... He's called me to do both on several occasions where I could teach with honest conviction about the subject.

For your own personal integrity and peace of mind, I would pass on this one....

I agree with sethpayne. Turn it down. If your wife says you should not, put family first again by following her advice.

And yet you get upset when we ex-mo critics so declare that here.

So, Ray, is from rooftops required? and here on an internet message board wrong? in your way of thinking? I can't see how the reconcile.

No, I'm not back at church. But unlike you, I don't crap on it.

You are.

If you believe that it is conclusively false, without question, then you are under obligation to declare it to the world.

Any more questions?

What is the source of this duty?

Hey MM

For a variety of reasons and without exception, my advice would be that you turn this offering down, period!

Found at the very top of this list of reasons, in my opinion - is taking ownership of our choices - considering what it might say (and/or might mean) to the many in the potential "audience" - and what these personal decisions can and often do say about our convictions, our moral stances and perhaps most importantly, the example we set for the most precious and valuable things we have in this life......Our children/spouses/Family.

As for me (If I was in a similar scenario where I did not even "believe" what I was being asked to teach), I can't imagine even considering this offer. An absolute no brainer in my book!

Anyway, just my take!

Peace,

Do you hold the courage of your convictions? Why is it that exmos or unbelievers always feel they have to tread "softly, softly"? So as not to upset the apple cart. Still harbouring some "reservations"? Think that religion is good for society? Why the secrecy? Why the double persona?

You're worried about what your family may think?

You're not willing to put your whole soul into your disbelief?

Like the believers who are willing to lay down life and limb for their beliefs.

Oh, I forget. You call that "fanaticism".

Obviously no one gives enough of a crap about you, Ray, and the choices you make. But Mortal Man, and many others, don't want to lose the family and friends they have over something as petty as religion.

I see a sub-group here that has very strong convictions that old school Mormon Apologetics and wrong and they do tend to shout this from the roof tops. I'm confused as to why that bothers you when you encourage that here?

Did you even think this through Ray? The poster that gets all butthurt when people criticize Mormonism tells people that don't believe that they should be declaring Mormonism false to the whole world even if it destroys their family relationships.
All while you yourself aren't declaring anything from the rooftops, you're not even going to church.

You're just doing what you always do Ray. You're just desperately trying to turn criticism away from the church by criticizing ex-mormons. Well you failed, and you made yourself look extremely hypocritical in the process. If you want to criticize ex-mormons that's fine. But stop derailing threads with your BS.
