This article is interesting in light of early-morning seminary. I'm sure most Church members would argue that the spiritual benefits outweigh the physical and psychological cost.

Thanks for the list. I was surprised to see Jihad vs. McWorld on the list. I remember reading this back in the 90's. While I didn't agree with all of the author's conclusions, I really liked the basic concept. Worth reading. In this case, you can tell a lot about a book from the cover:

"The great problem of any civilization is how to rejuvenate itself without rebarbarization."
- Will Durant
"We've kept more promises than we've even made"
- Donald Trump
"Of what meaning is the world without mind? The question cannot exist."
- Edwin Land

Haha!

I was also surprised and am curious to see what talk aligned with it and how they brought it forward to the present. I have an hour long discussion on CD somewhere that is a recording of Barber on the book from sometime around 2001.

As an aside, his later book Consumed is a personal favorite for reasons similar to how you describe Jihad vs. McWorld with a similar caveat. He overreaches in some areas. But it's hard to differentiate between when he is on thin ice with an argument and just happened to touch a nerve that made the argument personal enough to be uncomfortable.
