Well if you are living in a tent city, best to have a year's supply of condoms.
It is better to be a warrior in a garden, than a gardener at war.

Prayerful Prepper in the comments section:
Now this seem crazy. But I know something even crazier. I have TBM relative (SIL of whom I think a great deal) who recently purchased a long barrel Barrett .50 cal. This particular weapon is lethal at a range of well over 1.5 miles (>2000 meters) and sells for north of $12K new. (He would not say what he paid for it, especially with his wife within earshot.)
"So," I said, "how does shoot?"
"Don't know," he said. "Haven't found a place yet where I can safely sight it in.
I'll get around to it."
When I told him I had fired one at the indoor range at the Barrett factory in TN, he didn't believe me at first. I was finally able to describe the weapon and how it is made sufficiently to convince him.
What I couldn't believe was that he actually owned one and had never even fired it. When she saw the incredulity on my face, his wife confirmed that he had a 50 cal. locked away in a large safe at home.
She doesn't know what he paid for it either - and never expects to, I guess.
In the field, the Barrett is deployed with two man sniper teams. It weighs about 10 pounds more than an M-60 machine gun. Kick is less than you would think for a 50 cal. (It has a muzzle brake and bipod and weighs 30 pounds). As to report: don't pull the trigger unless you have safety glasses and ear protection (especially on an indoor range).
Nonetheless, hard to think of a weapon of choice less likely than a 30 pound, single shot rifle that costs $12K and fires 4 dollar rounds for one man defending his home during the Apocalypse.
Such are the values of LDS preppers.

The Barrett factory is a family owned business and most of its weapons remain part of the family. They have a killer QA program (pun intended) and know approximately where most of their military sniper rifles are deployed. When the rifles come back to the factory for re-furbishing, they get service histories and know pretty much what each one has done.
Same deal when I sought out the best combat instructor in the state to teach me how to fight and defend my loved ones in a crisis. I prayed about it and searched around for about a week.
Ended up finding and hiring a SWAT Team Leader and an ex-Special Forces Commando, all by the direction of the Holy Ghost. This is the Urban Combat training I did with them 2 weeks ago. They were excellent, and I'm going for more training over the next few weeks.

We just might be.
Any idea what she paid for it?
And more importantly, what did her significant other say about this purchase?

My brother in law and sister are both peppers of sorts. They have stockpiled weapons, ammo, food, mres, water, and bullion. They are fairly well off so the cost isn't really a big issue. I don't know for sure what she paid for it....

My daughter sent us a video of her shooting a .50 cal. at a range in Idaho. I told her she must really like this guy, as she's never shot a gun in her life before and has never been interested in doing so. He's not a crazy prepper, just a guy who likes hunting and fishing and, apparently, shooting large-caliber weapons.

Do you know the reason they bought it?
Have you ever fired (or even hefted) that beast?

They have a veritable arsenal of handguns, assault rifles, and now the 50. I figure it is for shooting zombies.
They are ready for the impending collapse of society. I reckon they haven't thought out what it will really mean if society collapse to the point they are defending their horde with firearms .
No, I have never shot it.

Other than morality in the home and the elimination of the Welfare state, the only way to fix the prison population is not to get rid of 3 strikes, but to make Prison a place people don't want to go.
Prison should be Tent City's, and they should have to work and do hard labor, and they should not be able to listen to music, watch TV, etc.
It's the Carrot and the Stick..... People of the criminal mindset are black and white, the only way to control their behavior is to make something worse. Of course, we can still have various education programs etc. to help those who have the desire to improve and those who are able to improve, so they can come out being more productive so they are even less likely to go back, so they can have some skills to rely on.
However, Prison needs to be prison..... not a Vacation as it currently is. Of course, it's not a vacation for some, which is also part of the problem, too much freedom and comfort allows the powerful to hurt the weak.
Did you know that more men are raped in the US than women?
It occurs in Prison..... 216,000 prisoners are raped per year in the U.S., compared to about 90,000 reported rapes outside prison

In a Tent City, where there is no ultimate privacy, this would not occur. And if Prisoners were tired from a hard days work, this further wouldn't occur.
Prisons like this should not exist.....

When I worked at the COB, there was this scrawny little guy with a pencil mustache who looked like life had beaten him down pretty severely. One day I overheard him saying he was stockpiling guns to protect himself and his family from the government. Scary stuff.
