Internet researching: First target of Attack

He said looking on the internet. He did not trim that back to just MDD. And what is the measuring stick for "the best" books, information and sources? Those that the COB issues. But remember, you're not in a cult, even if it looks, walks and sounds like a cult.

The Church certainly would be different today if the internet didn't exist.

Church growth/convert baptisms would be much different. And, the recent numerous attempts at being more open and honest would probably not have been made.

It speaks volumes that an organization would spend so much time discouraging its members from researching issues on the internet. It still shows the leadership is fearful and concerned about its members learning from outside sources. Hopefully, this will change as the Church matures and becomes less insecure in its claims.

I'm just glad the Church is starting to slowly turn the ship in the direction of more openness and honesty. It gives members like me hope.

Sure, but what choice did they really have? They aren't doing this out of the goodness of their hearts and simply because it is the right thing to do.

Context is everything. When are you anti-mormons going to learn that.
I won't get into the talk, but LDS leaders have also told us to get involved online, to not allow "slam dunks".

In other words, the counsel is to be "wise" in what we study, to strive to study out of the best books, information and sources.
Basically to be wise, and understand the "quality" i.e. the lack thereof of some things, such as this forum, which is why I read an entire book around once every two weeks, and delve into ALL news sources so I can know what's really true, good, lovely, and of good report.

No, it's so their messages can be understood by a greater cross-section of Church membership around the world. Certainly we can mock and belittle that administrative decision if we want, but at least understand the motivation instead of just imagining the one that makes your polemicizing the easiest.

Who said there was no value? I'm watching conference, and there are good insights to get out of it. It doesn't have to be an academic symposium to be of value. There are things I disagree with, but there are also things I like. I am a member of this community and I actively participate in it. There's absolutely nothing about that that is undermined by the capacity to think for oneself.
