I remember hearing all the time about how busy the brethren are (which is why we can't talk to them), what a burden Church administration is, etc. Yet apparently one of them has time to categorize and over-analyze the many, many Christmas cards he gets.

Apparently a Special Witness for Christ does not include a rudimentary understanding of statistics. Does the good Apostle think that the cards sent to him are representative of anything but the population of people motivated to send them to him in particular? I think it's another sad little "Me, too!" Mormon moment. The Brethren felt moved upon to show that the LDS were also giving a holy harrumph to the vast anti-Christmas conspiracy.

And the concern for the sanctity and hallowed nature of Christmas is so convincing coming from a leader of an organization that owns a mall.

Who is it that features prominently at the mall at this season of LDS Christ centred contemplation?

This reminds me of the year my parents gave beautiful, oversized snowglobes to all 8 of their children's families.

7 were beautiful crèche scenes, but for my family - the Catholics - ours was a Santa Claus scene.

Because I had left the Mormon church, my parent explained, they did not want to 'offend' me by imposing their beliefs.

Mormons are so ridiculously provincial.

I'd bet money that the Oaks family will be opening their presents from Santa Claus on Christmas morning just like everyone else. At least a lot of Catholics will be attending a midnight mass.

Do Mormons have any equivelant to the the midnight mass? Of course not! What Mormon in their right mind wants to drive over to the wardhouse for some boring-ass Mormon worship service on Christmas Eve, when they should be partying with their families instead?
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen

There are more, like this one for instance:
I am so grateful for a modern day apostle who speaks for the Lord, who can give us important revelations like this. Here I was, praying that Heavenly Father would give us a message this holiday season. Maybe something for the millions of Syrian refugees, who much like his son, are middle easterners forced to seek shelter and are desperate for help. Or maybe something for the hundreds of thousands of homeless in the United States, who are looking for a miracle this holiday season. But this is way better. It's obvious that my Savior knows that the most important message he can send to the earth is about which Christmas cards I should buy. Thank you Elder Oaks. You reaffirmed my faith in the Gospel.

I wonder how many of those cards were family photos? I'd feel like an asshole if I went through the bother of sending him a nice note/card, and then I ended up in pile #2 or #3.

"Your kindness is lacking. Pile #3 for you."

I wonder if someone sent him an envelope full of red and green glitter what pile that one would go into?

Why didn't Elder Oaks talk about the Christmas cards he sends out?
