With another Republican in the White House, I think Ryan would have probably stayed on till 2020, if not beyond. I can't believe that Paul Ryan looks at the trillion dollar deficit looming and believes that his job is done. The old Trent Lott line about herding cats seems appropriate; the gap between the wings of the party is becoming increasingly difficult to bridge. Legislation seems to fall apart from the edges, the center never holds.

I never liked his politics, and thought that he did a lot of artful b.s. to hide the draconian nature of his legislation on the poor. And yet I had to sympathize with his last few years in office, when he was trying to find a center for a party did not have the heart for the effort. One of the negatives of gerrymandering is that it makes incumbent congressmen impervious to challenge in the general election. So the only opponent they worry about is the challenger in the primary. The primary battle comes down to the incumbent's claim to be ideologically pure. And compromise is the heresy of the ideologically pure.

But Ryan was asked to compromise his own values on numerous occasions, and I think it just wore him down. At that point, the plus/minus between career and family just did not seem worth it, especially with the potentially catastrophic midterms. And presiding over the House with a President who could very well be impeached...Paul Ryan had few ways to win, and a lot of ways to lose.

I always thought if there really was a Satan, he'd look like Ryan. I can hardly think of a person in public service I believe to be more genuinely* deceptive and insidious than he is.

*I consider Drumpf more transparantly deceptive.

I think the age of retirement should be at 55. Too many 55+ year olds have a heart attack in the job. Paul Ryan is wise to retire at 48.

My plan is definitely to retire at 55 and pursue what I've always wanted to do... open a sports bar (which is code for something else). The retiring at 55 part is literal, however. It's not lost on me how lucky I am to be in this position.

my understanding is that anyone can retire at whatever age they like...and still go on to another job...or not....but Ryan still isn't eligible to collect social security yet, or did you have other information.
