I think Conservatives have a very deep fear of Liberals. I just learned [violation of Universal Rule #3 deleted]. Some might say that it was a hair fire reaction of the former to being outed by the latter, but I would say it's because Stalin killed millions of people.

Serious question: Do the moderators wish the matter to which this post apparently refers to become a matter of open discussion on this board? It would be good to have a ruling as soon as possible.

Separate question: Stalin was a liberal? OK, then so was Mao Zedong and so is Kim Jong-un, I suppose.

Serious question: Have you been to any other countries?

I'm curious what your criteria for country greatness is.

How do you function? Serious. Do you need to nanny everything that sends your balls into your chest cavity? The post is 100% contextual.

I'd like to hear an answer to that too.

I have been a long observer of the phenomenon of patriotic enthusiasm in more than one country. Its presence or absence seems to have virtually nothing to do with any objectively perceptible qualities of the countries concerned. Mostly it seems to be a matter of a need for self-affirmation by praising the collectivity to which you perceive yourself to belong, and demanding that others join in.

The tendency is particularly marked at times when people feel insecure and under stress. At such times it is a short step from enthusiastic affirmation of national solidarity to listing those who need to be excluded from that solidarity so as to keep 'the rest of us' safe and as wonderful as we currently are in (whatever for us happens to be) the most wonderful country of all.

"Patriotism" said Dr Samuel Johnson, "is the last resort of the scoundrel". That does not mean of course that every patriotic person is a scoundrel. But it does mean that in politics one finds quite a few examples of really bad people who do decide that a good way out of whatever fix they are in would be to proclaim their ultra-patriotic credentials. I mean, they must be good guys if they love their country, right?

Without question. But this isn't just beginning. Conservatives across this awesome country have felt, in large measure and for some time now, that they have had little to no voice/representation.

I'm very curious about this last statement, ceebs. When you say that conservatives have felt like they've had little to no representation, what do you mean by that specifically?

Hey Chap,

I've asked this question before and I've never gotten an answer. If you ever want utter silence, ask what makes America great.

And as a follow up to that question, if America is so great, why do we need to make it great again? Doesn't that imply it was great at one time, but isn't any more, and it needs to return to its former glory? What made it great before that suddenly went away? (I have my own personal answer to this question, but I highly suspect my answer is much different the idiot President's).

I think you are correct that people pay lip service to these kinds of ideas but never really think about what they're saying.

So, to review, it's the greatest country in the world that needs to be made great again... or something.

I think he's right about this (I know I don't feel represented), which makes me wonder why they keep voting for the same party who won't do anything for them. The "conservative" on the label is BS.
