On the outside, there is a long-time enemy of the United States whose aim is to see American society destabilized and internally damaged. Faced with the known aims and actions of an external enemy, one would think we could step back and rally around the things that ultimately unite us rather than be overcome by this external enemy.

It's not an external enemy that is preventing America to unite (neither the one you suggest here or any other external enemy on planet earth, past or present). It is, without question, an unbridgeable divide that consists of American citizens alone.

We are not overcome by an external enemy. Not the one you suggest. Nor any any other that you haven't suggested. We have been overcome by a gaping divide amongst ourselves. It is internal.

Reread what I said, ceebs. I'm pointing out that what you describe above - that we can't set our internal differences aside even to deal with a historic and obvious external attack on our democracy - is shocking. I don't expect you to have much to offer about that other than to confirm you are right in the thick of it but either way...

Fear often leads to hate. Fear is often an excuse for hate. Either way, fear is an individual's responsibility. Especially when it's fear of your fellow human beings for things that haven't happened and that are predicted by total strangers for political purposes. This is what so much of partisanism is. This is also the key to fundraising. The spigots of money and power. It's also ugly and dishonest and easily weaponized and difficult to control. Unchecked it becomes a cultural arms race that could turn into national apocalypse. A wet dream for political cultists and a nightmare for the rest of us.
