FAIRMormon Conference: Mopologists Unhinged

Post by _Kishkumen »

Interesting intel has come to light on the extent to which Mopologists might be said to fall short of Christian standards in their anger toward fellow Mormon scholars.

At the most recent FAIRMormon Conference, John Gee said the following in his presentation:

There is more evidence for the Book of Abraham than the Documentary Hypothesis.

Which caused the irascible Midgley to erupt with:

”BOKOVOY!!!!

This kind of rage is not, as the evidence indicates, rare.

Some time ago, at another FAIRMormon Conference, DCP showed a slide bearing a quote from Loyd Ericson, at which sight the Mopologists collectively shouted, “GET HIM!!!

Other board participants have their accounts to share. Who can forget Midgley’s bad behavior at the Tanners’ bookstore or at Deseret Book? Many more incidents come to mind. I thought it important, however, to document these events for Cassius’ database of Mopologists behaving badly. If ever you wonder why the Maxwell Institute marginalized Mopologetics, review these records and wonder no more.

I honestly don't even understand this exchange.

I mean, I get that David B. was an advocate of mixing apologetics with the documentary hypothesis prior to his departure from Mopologetics (and severing of all professional ties with the LDS church).

But I don't get what exactly shouting out his name was supposed to mean in this context.

Have they made it into some kind of slang word among themselves a la what Dan Savage did to Santorum?

Yes! I think so. Or, perhaps the cry of BOKOVOY is short for “Take that, Bokovoy and all other people who value the Documentary Hypothesis over Gee’s arguments supporting a literally ancient Book of Abraham!”

Or it could be a way of saying, “Damn Bokovoy and all other clueless people who think that way!”

Given what we know of Midgley’s impulsive and uncontrolled anger, as was manifested when he complained bitterly and loudly that the Tanners were selling the gay Mike Quinn’s books, I don’t think it was a compassionate lament.

Bokovoy is no longer in Mormonism? When did this happen? Gee's literal Abraham doesn't fly. Poor guy, attempting to legitimately take the shoes or fill in the shoes of Hugh Nibley, and the problem is, he did. But Nibley was just wrong, both historically and Egyptologically, with which Gee has turn 180 degrees and ran the football into his own endzone scoring for the opponents, yet he celebrates as if he won the game. Poor guy. Ritner has his number and has shown so. There has not yet to my understanding (minimal at best) that RItner has not been refuted by anyone within the sacred halls of Valhalla the Neal A. Maxwell Institute.

He announced on Facebook last week that he was cutting all "professional" ties with the church. The 2015 policy against baptism of children of LGBT parents was part of his reason.

He still identifies as "Mormon." Not sure of the extent of his belief in LDS theology and doctrine anymore.

The questions were even more problematic for him. Review of Ritner's essay - no intention of responding to Ritner. - Why does Ritner care? - Thought review was weak.- Who cares (laughter by audience).

Not sure whether he's formally removed himself from membership or not.

Review was weak, but I ain't gonna show where. Why does Ritner care? Well, perhaps truth is more important to him than for Gee. No intention of responding to Ritner? Why is this no surprise? The truth is there is no ability to respond to Ritner. He has the Egyyptological analysis and logic and history on his side. Gee is bankrupt, it is so obvious. Now the shoe is on the other foot, at one time the Evangelicals were losing the Battle and not knowing it, now its the Mormons turn.

He was and is one of the best people I've interacted with on the net. Even as a post-Mormon I enjoyed his book on the D H, especially for the willingness to tackle the issue which for all intents and purposes seems fatal to the Church's claims. It's one of the very few books on Mormonism I've purchased since moving on that I don't regret the time or money spent on it. I wish him the best in whatever direction this takes him.
