I don't actually think you're too far off the mark. I've noticed a lot of Liberals don't like to be called Liberal because of its connotations. Leftists are general uncomfortable being outed as such. Socialists will pretty much flat out deny they're Socialists. And Communists roll their eyes when being identified as such, only because they're super in the closet about it. Same with Marxists. In fact, now that I think about it Democrats aren't too fond of openly identifying as such.
If I had to guess why I'd say that most left-leaning types are pretty nuanced when it comes to their ideas and political leanings, despite probably voting line Democrat. For example, I'm Consevative on governments carrying too much debt, but Liberal if the debt means building, say, a megaproject that benefits everyone and can be 'repaid' through an increase in commerce, or even quality of life. Extrapolate that out to all the issues and I think everyone is a blend of different politicl ideals.
