poop app
If you visit San Francisco you can get a app that will tell you where human poop is on the streets. You can see people pooping in certain LA streets just about every morning ...is this the answer?

Seems like there should be better sightseeing apps for San Francisco.

Pretty sure that anyone who has ever walked around downtown areas could have benefitted from public restrooms being available. Even the anal retentive could benefit from such restrooms, even if they argue against it.

Yup. Public toilets are a rather obvious answer. People with no homes need these for basic human dignity. So provide them.

Yep, and out of the gate he wants to add $105m to the already $200m fire safety budget....funded via (shocking) a new fee on phone bills.

You have obviously never been to a big city with large homeless populations. That doesn't always work unless you have 24/7 cleaning and security at the restrooms, and many of the chronic won't use them anyways, many haven't showered in years, why would they care about hygiene?
Unattended they turn into shelters, drug dens, and even a place for prostitution....it has been tried.
They work at the shelters in that they have security and enforced rules. SF is putting in public toilets I have no idea how they keep from turning into shelters though.
I know LA has tried different versions of public restrooms and I have read mixed reviews...but at any rate in the skidrow areas the city has a crew and is systematically scheduled in shutting down a block, one at a time, in order to vacuum up trash and poop with a huge vacuum truck and then steam clean the streets and sidewalks in attempts to avoid disease. I read where a shelter worker got a flesh eating disease and lost his leg because of street poop and pee. I also doubt a person needing to use the restroom in the middle of the night while living in a tent or just sleeping on a piece of cardboard will seek a restroom, especially if mentally ill, or high.

Yes, because sleeping on the street is dignified so why not create an anchor by putting up "public toilets" (which ironically already exist). Common sense dictates that people with no homes need homes.

I love that idea that providing public facilities of the kind that many civilised cities have taken for granted since the 19th century is some kind of 'anchor' that keeps people on the street. "Yeah, I'd really like a decent home, but with those public toilets out there what can I do? They just ... keep pulling me back to my favourite sidewalk sleeping spot. How I wish someone would just close them down."
And of course the best way of dealing with homelessness is to provide homes.
But even with the kind of public housing policy that might do that at an adequate scale, it would take a long time until there are no homeless out there. A city that does not provide that amenity will suffer obvious consequences when there are large numbers of homeless people with functioning bowels and bladders. And in any case there will still be people who have a home but just need a public toilet they can use for free in the course of their day.
