Hi Philo,
I think this is a statement that dovetails (I know this term is familiar to a woodworker ) nicely with Section 76 in the D&C.
I agree with you. We create our own 'place' in the world that brings us fulfillment and peace. That may even carry on into another sphere of existence.
I think that you, for one, might find the Buddhist tradition mixed with Mormon tradition that Thomas McConkie describes kind of interesting. If nothing else, but to see where one person's path has taken them. Even though he did end up back in the church.
I get the point about Thomas Wirthlin McConkie's obvious privilege. At the same time, he seems to me to have lived a pretty genuine life of seeking that brought him back to the faith of his youth. I don't think that serves as any kind of validation of his religion. Instead it shows how powerful the call of identity, family, and heritage are, whether you are a McConkie or a relative nobody. Others make the same return all the time.
Personally, I like what I have heard of The Wicker Man's work. If he can contribute to the improvement of Mormon spirituality in any way, his efforts will not have been wasted. In the past Mormons have been so focused on doctrine and ordinances that their concept of religious experience has suffered by comparison. Everyone is so focused on a narrow kind of spiritual high from the Holy Ghost that they neglect or are ignorant of the wider palette of spiritual experiences. McConkie seems to be broadening the spiritual repertoire of Mormons who go to him searching for such. I think that's pretty cool.

That's odd. I wasn't aware of that. Thanks for that information. I'm sure it's reliable.
Maksutov wrote:You've never shown any interest in seeking knowledge, just derailing threads.
And yet, here you are...derailing a thread.
Hope all is well with you.
For what it's worth, I've found Thomas Wirthlin McConkie's contributions interesting in that he has a background of having been involved for many years in Buddhist training...meditation, contemplation practice, etc. I find his perspective 'enlightening' (pun intended).
But to each his own, right?

Think of it as karma for the myriad derailings you performed. Or me under the power of the Holy Ghost to teach you humility. But I'm content to be a human being commenting on another. Don't like my comments? You're welcome to report me. Thoughts and prayers.

I am fine with this POS returning to religion of his youth/family. And I'm sure it is inspirational to those who give a crap about Monmonism, but what I DETEST is seeking monetary gains from the return. This Ponderizing, Merchandising, Exploiting of the "Faithful" is GOD DAMN WRONG!!!!
There is a perfect venue to tell his story without compensation, its called the Ensign, New Era and other publications. Hell, POS could have posted his story on the Internet at HIS COST and thus enriched the lives of those who listened or read about his journey.

Mormonism generates dough coming and going (cough John Dehlin cough). It was a moneymaker to begin with, although it acquired odd bits like theological pretensions (to save Daddy and Brother) and like so many other cults, a path for the founder into the panties of the female followers.

Please, let us not ridicule magic rocks in a hat! We must be open minded to the occult AND the meditation practices, etc of other traditions.
I'm sure that in Mormon heaven you will have to purchase your White Stone with your New Name on it. Oh, and the manna won't be free either.
“To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written, which no one knows except him who receives it.” Revelation 2:17.

I agree. And this is what he is all about. I haven't purchased any of his material or subscribed to any of his Lower Lights services...but I have enjoyed listening to his take on spirituality and mindfulness.
