Exmormon Reddit is not a good look

Post by _lostindc »

Exmormon Reddit is really not a good look. The topics over there tend to be teen oriented in scope. Most posts are very angry and a lot of the anger is directed at TBM parents, which is fine. I just thought that sub will evolve overtime. I do believe the posts on reddit is an indicator that those leaving the Church tend to be young.

I don't think it will ever change all that much.

People tend to go there when they first leave and they're discovering the truth about Mormonism along with what it means for them going forward. It's a support group of those dealing with disapproving families and trying to navigate all of that.

I think once people get out of that angry stage they visit the sub a lot less and at some point either lurk occassionally or just stop altogether, so the bulk of posts are going to be from those who have recently left.

That's just my observation of course -- I used to be in a group for dog owners who had going through dog injuries/surgeries so we could all give each other support and advice during treatment/surgery/rehab/etc.

Most people would stop posting completely once their dog had been recovered for a time while some stuck around to give advice longer and a few post years later. I think that's normal for support type groups, and I think the exmo reddit is so large that those few people that continue to post are more of less drowned out by the masses figuring it all out in real time.

That's a fair point.

I would figure quite a few would graduate and move over to this board at some point.

I still see Dehlin, Sam Young, and similar types posting on exmo reddit. Dehlin, Young, and others make sense because they have businesses to run and promotion is necessary.

I post over there sometimes too, but it's more of a quick thought than an in-depth thing because that sub does not lend itself to drawn out conversation.

And I have to think almost no one on emo reddit knows about boards like this... I only came across it because of a random thread on another board I had recommended to me.

You're right about Dehlin, Sam Young, etc posting there - they are promoting their causes/sites/etc (which is another issues to debate I suppose) and the exmo subreddit puts you in front of a lot of people quicker than any other method I know of for a Mormon audience.

It used to be a lot more substantive years ago. Now it's just rants and memes.

Not a good look, sure, but it does a lot of good regardless.

I wish I could've been there for that - I much prefer substantive discussions to the memes and selfies.

And look - I get the memes because they can really drive home a legit point, but I just like having more substance to it so I can better process everything with Mormonism better.
