Remember that Smokey's larger argument here is that people say Hitler was bad, but they really have no case for that. Dipping into holocaust denialism to argue Ann Frank's diary was a hoax is a demonstration of that, as if the only reason anyone ever thought ill of Hitler was the diary of Anne Frank.

“In response to growing skepticism about the authenticity of the famous diary, the State Institute for War Documentation in Amsterdam (Rijksinstituut voor Orloogsdocumentatie or RIOD) published a book in 1986 which includes a facsimile of a letter supposedly written by Anne dated 30 July 1941.

The discovery in the USA of some more samples of Anne’s handwriting was announced in July 1988. This includes two letters dated 27 and 29 April 1940 and a postcard that was sent with one of the letters, all written to an ll-year-old penpal in Danville, Iowa.

These letters create a new problem for the State Institute for War Documentation because the handwriting on them is quite different than the “adult” handwriting of her letter of 30 July 1941 as well as most of the purported diary manuscript. “

This is what happens when your moral compass, base, and underpinnings are crowdsourced rather than formed by responsible parenting, extended family, and your neighborhood. We live in a time when kids like Smokey are left to develop mentally and emotionally on the Internet, through social platforms, by waves and waves of imagery and commentary designed to elicit behaviors rather than classical reasoning, thinking, problem solving, and responsible social contracts with one another.

I’d ask our droopy boomer to explain why the whole Anne Frank thing is a thing anyway, and what effect it supposedly has on the legacy of Hitler and Nazi Germany.
