Sir have to meet you in person. I really hope to move to Seattle Washington in the future (like in 2 to 5 years from now). It is probably the best city to make a living in the US.

I love it here. I was born in Seattle and raised in Western Washington. Went to school in Utah, Northern California, and Boston. Never considered living anywhere else in the country.

The cost of living is very high here, especially housing. But if you work in tech, there are lots of jobs around.

Let me know when you’re out this way, and I’ll buy you lunch.

Someone's smart kid (and I ain't saying whose) posted this to Facebook. Not gonna lie. It's powerful. I should have been so lucky to raise a kid like that. ;-)

MeDotOrg wrote:I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I work as a Tour Guide, and I'm closer to 70 than 65. My health is very good. Some days I do walking tours, but most days are spent on the top of an open top bus. Day tours are 2.5 hours, night tours 1.5 hours. On the day tours we make 16 stops. That means 16 times up and down the stairs, if someone wants to get on or off. Up until last week, I did 3 day tours a day.

The bad news is I work in a very high risk environment. I am in close contact with travelers from all over the world. My best friend, who I visit daily, has a daughter with severe medical problems that make her very high risk. So right now I'm asking myself if I should not visit them, which I do every day.

California Governor Newsom is now recommending that all persons over 65 self-quarantine. I'm going to work tomorrow, but I will be talking with them about what to do. Business is so bad, and the future of tourism is so dismal I feel I'm probably going to be laid off in the next few weeks anyway, so I'm tempted to try to stay until I get laid off.

I hope things work out for you that it will be safe for you to return to your job, which you clearly love, based on what you have posted. I regard you as one of the most knowledgeable and interesting posters on this forum, and I bet your customers are delighted with your services! I live about 120 miles from San Francisco, and though I can't imagine living there full time, or any other large metropolis, it is one of my favorite big cities to visit. There are a lot of interesting things to visit and do there. The next time I go there, I would love to be in on one of your guided tours. I imagine it would probably be one of, if not the most memorable and enjoyable part of my visit! When this corona virus crisis blows over, I will make the prospect of getting to take one of your tours one of my main motivations for my next visit to your city! Before I go, whenever that is, I will PM you to get the details of how to catch one of them. I would love to meet you in person!

Until then, keep safe, and stay healthy!

To all those who responded to my post: First, thank you all for your concern. I've worked at my company for 5 years. We recently unionized, and I need to check with our union rep tomorrow about my predicament.

I have seniority, but with unemployment and Social Security I will be okay financially. There were younger guides with families that lost their jobs. One of those guides could have my hours if I were laid off.

I also have an appointment (timing!) for my yearly physical on Tuesday. Rest assured the status of my employment will come up. I could very well get some sort of note from my doctor.

The sad thing is, I have loved being a Tour Guide in retirement. Sadly, some of the best tours for me are the Cruise Ships loaded with senior citizens. Senior citizens are more sedentary, which means they usually don't hop off, and take the entire 2.5 hour tour. Because I'm older, I can establish a rapport, and by the end of the tour you see a lot smiles, which is really rewarding. Aussieguy, you'll be happy to know my second favorite group is Australians. There are the most easy-going and relaxed travelers.

So the very thing that I love, meeting people from all over the world and showing them San Francisco, is now a dangerous thing for all involved. Not for a moment would I compare my risk to a health care worker, EAllusion. But it is sad that human intercourse will be diminished. And being realistic, it will be months to more than a year before the tourism industry starts to recover. And the business models may be different if and when it does recover.

I think about MDB, and I think about the people that I have been conversing with for years. I really do appreciate the sense of connection I feel with the people on this board. As we begin to self-isolate, I think of the streets of Siena, but it's hard to sing along on the internet.
:-(

...but then there's the other side of the coin:

Politico wrote:At least three people who visited Mar-a-Lago in the past 10 days have tested positive for the deadly virus, and were spotted in photographs with the president and other club members. A top Brazilian official, Ambassador to the U.S. Nestor Forster, who was seated with the president at a Saturday night dinner at the club, tested positive for COVID-19. So did Fabio Wajngarten, the press secretary to President Jair Bolsonaro who was spotted standing next to Trump in an Instagram post. An email to Trump supporters who attended a fundraiser at the club last Sunday suggests there was now also a mysterious third person who was at the club last weekend with the virus.

The chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, Ronna McDaniel, came down with flu-like symptoms on Friday and her doctor determined a test for coronavirus was necessary, a spokesman said.

The handshakes, diplomatic huddles, cozy VIP photo-ops and meet-and-greets at Mar-a-Lago became a potential nexus for other cases — the mayor of Miami, Francis Suarez, tested positive after being in the same area as the Brazilian officials. Since last weekend, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Giménez and several Republican lawmakers close to the White House — Rep. Matt Gaetz, Sen. Rick Scott and Sen. Lindsey Graham — all self-quarantined as a precaution.

My partner is a nurse manager. One of the nurses she supervises called in sick reporting that her dry cough has developed into a dry cough with high fever.

Not great.

So far, in my California central valley community, there have been no confirmed cases of covid-19, but it is still having a big impact. A lot of things are becoming scarce in the main supermarkets. We couldn't find any milk at Sam's Club or Walmart when we shopped for groceries on Friday. My wife drove to Winco and other supermarket Saturday evening for milk, and they didn't have any either. Before she came back, though, I walked to our local neighborhood mom&pop grocery and convenience store just up the street from us, and they had plenty of milk, though at a considerably higher price than we were accustomed to paying.

The master chorale group I sing with just cancelled all our practice sessions and concerts for this season, and the master gardener group my wife and daughter are members of cancelled all scheduled meetings and activities until further notice. Church services are also all cancelled for the LDS Church my wife and daughters attend. I will probably also have to seriously consider cancelling my regular walks that I enjoy so much, even though no corona virus cases have yet been reported here. Governor Newsome has recommended that everyone 65 or older confine themselves to their own homes.

I don't know if I ever let on how sick I was. I came on 2think in October. Went through the gauntlet there as you well know and survived it. ;-) In December we went back home for a funeral, my first time home since my mother died years earlier. I posted about it. Anyway, went back to work, secured a promotion, and then we went on Winter Break during which time I started a slow slide into hell. I remember watching the ball drop on New Years Eve, trying to sleep in a recliner with my chest on fire thinking "I just got the directorship and now I'm going to die", with tears rolling down my face. When we went back to work I had probably been to the base doctors 3 times. Treat the symptoms. Treat the symptoms. Until one day I found myself so sick at work I pulled the blinds down on my office windows, put my head down on my desk and sobbed. I had the paramedics across the street come over to check me out. My pulse ox was in the tank and they told me to go to the ER "NOW, Miss Jersey". Had someone drive me there, they thought I had pneumonia but as it turned out I only had bronchitis. That was enough to scare me into a flu shot every fall.

I think if I were to get that sick now, 20 years later, I wouldn't make it out of the tank. So I will sit here out in the woods and just deal with it.
