Kamala's anti catholic bigotry

Someone might want to remind Joe Biden, who’s just picked progressive California senator Kamala Harris as his running mate, that his vice-president-to-be believes Catholics are unfit to serve in our nation’s courts. (Biden, of course, as I considered at length on the homepage today, has spent his entire political career invoking his Catholic faith.)

In late 2018, while evaluating the nomination of Brian Buescher to serve as a district judge in Nebraska, Harris posed a series of questions insinuating that his involvement in the Knights of Columbus — a charitable Catholic fraternal organization — disqualified him from serving on the bench. Here’s one of her written questions:

Since 1993, you have been a member of the Knights of Columbus, an all-male society comprised primarily of Catholic men. In 2016, Carl Anderson, leader of the Knights of Columbus, described abortion as “a legal regime that has resulted in more than 40 million deaths.” Mr. Anderson went on to say that “abortion is the killing of the innocent on a massive scale.” Were you aware that the Knights of Columbus opposed a woman’s right to choose when you joined the organization?

She went on to ask Buescher whether he was “aware that the Knights of Columbus opposed marriage equality when [he] joined the organization” and whether he had “ever, in any way, assisted with or contributed to advocacy against women’s reproductive rights.”

Harris’s colleague, Democratic senator Mazie Hirono of Hawaii, went a bit further, asking Buescher whether he intended to “end [his] membership with this organization to avoid any appearance of bias” — in other words, intimating that she would withhold her vote at least until he had left the Knights of Columbus.

These two Democrats were, in short, suggesting that belonging to a Catholic group with millions of members, which has been an important charity in the U.S. for more than a century, renders an individual unfit to serve as a judge.

More sinister even than that, Harris used Buescher’s membership in the Knights of Columbus as a pretext to insinuate that opposition to abortion, a core component of Catholic teaching on the dignity and value of human life, disqualifies an individual from the bench.

Buescher eventually was confirmed, and at the behest of Nebraska senator Ben Sasse, the Senate later voted unanimously to reaffirm the constitutional clause forbidding religious tests for public officeholders. But the fact remains that Harris was guilty of reprehensible anti-Catholic bigotry, and there’s no reason to believe her views have changed.

I have long found it interesting how many Catholic Democrat Politicians (and even a few Republican Catholic politicians) publicly support pro-choice and LGBT rights. I applaud them for doing so, but I often find it hard to understand why they choose to remain Catholics, given the Church's hardline opposition to those positions.

As for the constitutional prohibition of religious tests for political office, surely it makes no sense for that prohibition to be absolute. There has to be a practical limit to how inclusive that prohibition can be. Should candidates belonging to religions that advocate, for examples, capital punishment merely for being gay, non-Christian, Atheist, or political dissidents; or who advocate ritualistic human sacrifice to propitiate the gods; etc. be granted equal consideration and unprejudicial access to political office along with everyone else?

Fair point. Generally, that is what he does. I think he really believes we could all live in harmony if we could all just get on the same page about the less delightsome races.

The problem is that guys like him are providing an example of their race, and it's not working out too well for them (and we all know how important it is to look at one person's behavior and assume it's a problem with their entire race). It's hard to argue you're from a superior race when you lie like an asshole and think like a moron.

As I mentioned in a previous thread, I didn't vote for Kamala Harris in California, but I will be voting for the Biden/Harris ticket. Trump as President, has shown the most contempt for the Constitution than any other President in my lifetime.

So you can't be a federal or state judge if a member of the knights of Colombus? I guess that would apply to Mormons and most Christians since they don't solemnize gay marriages. But if you belong to an Islamic sect that preaches death to America and inspires jihadist that's not political and should be off limits to comgressional approval inquiry?

Biden means nothing at this point. He's got one foot in the spirit world already and basically no say so in anything. Why would someone as princpled as Kamala run with a man she views as a segragationist and sexual predator. I guess cause she wasn't able to win the Democratic nomination through voting she needed a backdoor means of entry to the presidency. Get a food taster Joe!

Saw a video of him recently riding a bike. He seemed quite healthy and agile. Not something we can expect Trump to do. Trump may be a few years younger, but I suspect Biden has better odds of out living Trump just based on looking at how healthy they are today.
