Wowza. That level of gymnastics, unburdened by reasonable logic, can literally prove or justify anything.
It's apologetics. That means you just make stuff up to help defend your faith. Like tapirs pulling chariots into battle.

This goes back to my theory that a fair amount of people don’t need the truth, they just need someone in their tribe to say something, no matter how ridiculous, so they can believe ‘the issue has been addressed”. Voila - belief system good to go.

It seems odd that some in the church try so hard to argue that Joseph Smith didn’t have sex with any of his wives other than Emma. It’s like it’s not become something embarrassing to fight against — that Joseph must remain pure, but Brigham et al. don’t need that protection.

During the church’s polygamy years, members didn’t see it that way. It seems they went the other direction to show that he did consummate his marriages, or at least some of them.

It seems as if the church is so embarrassed of parts of its history that they try to hide as much of it as possible. Obviously, they can’t hide Brigham et al., but isn’t that in some ways admission that against the Brighamite faction?

Joseph is the beloved prophet. Brigham was a Wild West character who's personality was needed to navigate the time. It isn't just sex with other women that Joseph gets a pass for. There is also the vehement pushback against his legal troubles. Despite being arrested over 40 times many believers refuse to believe he was convicted of any crime. Ambiguous trumped up charges. Anti Mormon lies. The adversary. If it weren't for Joseph's repeated use of habius corpus he would have probably been in jail early on.
