Nelson and Classmates Play Practical Joke on Japanese Girl in Medical School

Post by Gabriel »

The following is a raw transcript from an interview with Howard Sharp. an alumnus of the University of Utah School of Medicine. Brother Sharp was one of Russell M. Nelson's classmates in medical school. In the bolded portion below he describes a practical joke that he and Russell played on a Japanese nursing student which involved having Russell instruct her to bend over a cadaver for close inspection just before air is blasted through the trachea to make the body's fat expand into her face.

Brother Sharp admits that such a joke "wouldn’t be very nice today." I wonder to what degree it would have been considered "nice" back then, given the Church's avowed racial doctrines and so close upon the heels of the Pacific war against Japan, not to mention the fact that it was played on a younger girl -- just a couple of Mormon boys having some good clean fun.
HS: ...And then we got into our – I guess our first year in medical school. The first day was interesting in that Dr. Chester [Swinert 8:12] was assigned to us. And he said, “Look on either side of you because one of you is not going to be here at the end of four years,” which made us feel very confident. We had 52. And at the end of four years we had only 26. There were four smart ones who went away and went through other schools. But the rest of us, half of us either flunked out or had – made to come back and take another year. And at the end of a year, why, we’d come back and see who was with us and who wasn’t. There’d usually be eight or ten boys, sometimes girls. There were very few women in medicine at that day – who were not there. And we found out they were taking the course over or just totally flunked out. So that went on. My first interesting class was gross anatomy. It was kind of gross.

HG: Yeah [laughs]. It was kind of gross. I’ve read about it. And your professor was...

HS: Eddie Hashimoto.

HG: I hear good stories about him.

HS: Yeah. He was a good guy. And Dr. [Swinert ?] had a part of it all. But I shared a cadaver with Russell Nelson. You’ve heard of him.

HG: Yes.

HS: And Whitney Clayton. And the one who’s the seven – of 70 – of the 70 of the LDS Church. That was his father. And so just two cadavers down was Dr. John Dickson, who – he wasn’t a doctor then but became the president, the dean of the medical school. So I met some –

HG: You were in good company.

HS: Oh, I really was. These were some bright guys. And so when we finished our first year of gross anatomy, why, we didn’t have the summer off, and so the five of us were elected to take a gross anatomy course, a pro section course. And they had sent a 300-pound cadaver up from the Provo insane asylum. And that was the one –

HG: Wow.

HS: We would have to [sec 10:59] down probably eight or nine inches to get to the muscle. And we had no air conditioning. It would be 95 degrees in there. So the fat was just rolling out of this cadaver.

HG: Oh, gross. Gross is right [laughs]. How did they preserve them then? Like, now they put them – they make sure they’re cooled and the temperature – and it preserves them for longer. But back then you just wrapped them up and –

HS: Well, they did that. But they preserved with formaldehyde. They’d shoot formaldehyde in their veins. So anyway, we were expected to teach the nurses a bit of gross anatomy. And I don’t know whether you want spicy little things –

[both laugh]

...

HS: So this is the one who became the dean of the medical school.

HG: Dr. Dickson.

HS: Dr. Dickson, yeah. This is Russell Nelson. And I’m not sure where I am, just checking things out there. And here’s this 300-pound cadaver and [unclear 12:57] sticking out there. And we found that if you put an air hose under there and up through the trachea that you could actually make those things balloon out. And so here’s a little Japanese girl with thick classes. Russell says, “If you will look very closely, you will find the enterococcus particles in the [alveoline 13:26].” She had her nose right down there and we all turned the air hose on. And she jumped about three feet, turned, and she was gone.

HG: [laughs] Scared her.

HS: So that wouldn’t be very nice today. So I don’t know how we need to publicize that. But that was one of the stellar things that happened to us.

With such a devilish grin, you can see why he became the LDS President.

It goes without saying that the joke was cruel and vulgar. What I found interesting is Rusty's role in the joke. Here are five brilliant students of semi-diverse backgrounds. They decide to play a joke, and out of these five brilliant high achievers, Rusty is picked to lie to the victim. This was a group decision that likely happened quickly and it was readily apparent to all, including Rusty, that Rusty had the superior talent and disposition to go through with the lie.

The lie is pulled off by feigning sincerity and quickly inventing technobabble for the sake of deception. It was an abuse of both authority or seniority and construing falsehoods. And of course, it requires a character willing to to do such a thing in the first place.

This is one of the most revealing stories of Rusty yet. All doubts should be put to rest as to whether Rusty is capable of quickly manufacturing BS at the expense of somebody else in order to achieve an end. It confirms what I recently told MG 2.0, that the brethren think the Saints outside of the elite inner circle are a joke.

MG 2.0 might be easily influenced and the definition of a milquetoast, and terrible at argumentation, but would MG 2.0 take part in a joke to explode flesh from a cadaver all over the face of a young Japanese girl with thick glasses just for a laugh? Never. He wouldn't be part of that in any way, let alone be the front-man. He's not a bad person, just gullible. But Nelson, and many of the brethren? Absolutely, they'd lie to MG 2.0 without a second thought and leave him in the gutter while they skip off laughing.

9 daughters until she finally bore him a male.

I wonder if he gave her any rest after that. She sure looks like she deserved it.

You've also got the abuse of a deceased person by Nelson and his chums, for laughs. What kind of a person does that?
