Wishing you the best Honor. Sounds like it was a harrowing experience that you handled well.

Wow, that is ka-razy. Ya know, I've been in my share of fist fights over the years and one thing I've come to know about myself is I could never be a battle commander or Kung-Fu artist as I have no ability to have an awareness, think quick enough in the moment. There is no way I could stay calm enough to think up and perform a good ju-jitsu move.

So, my hat is off to you to be able to stay cool and confident when besieged by a bad outlaw, in your face and declared as armed. Well done!

Thanks Moksha and dantana.

It's interesting that the story now feels a little embarrassing to me. Not that I feel embarrassed by anything that happened, but it seems dumb enough I feel embarrassed about bringing it up. I sent the police paperwork I received to the office and gave them a summary in an email. Nothing really happened to me, life just keeps going on, it's...I don't know. Dumb.

First of all, you told the story extremely well. All of the thoughts processing in your head as you are reacting to the situation...it just seemed understandable and frightening.

And that is surely one aspect of the internet: We have grown nerve endings into the lives of human beings we have never met. These connections effect people differently. But the knowledge of that story becomes something that your limbic system can process. The next time a homeless approaches me in a car, your story will be somewhere in the back of my consciousness.

Many years ago, I supplemented my income by being a 'key runner' for a burglar alarm company. They held the keys to hundreds of businesses in San Francisco. If there was an alarm at one of those businesses, the dispatcher would tell the police "We have a runner responding with keys". I would meet the police at the premise, do a walk-through, and reset the alarm or notify the owner if there was a break-in.

I think it was the second night I was on call, I had to respond to an alarm at a bar on the corner of Haight Street and Fillmore. This area is called the Lower Haight (down the hill from the hippie part of Haight). It has been gentrified, but back then it was a pretty tough neighborhood. I wasn't sure how to proceed, but I went into the bar to check before the police arrived.

I checked the bathrooms in the back, but when I came out and saw 2 guys hiding behind the bar. I was armed with a clipboard, a badge and a flashlight. Looking back, I thank God that the right words came to my head:

"I'm sorry Gentlemen, but we're closed now."

It gave us a polite fiction to hide behind, that they had entered the bar after I did. It let them know that would not stop them if they tried to leave, which they did.

To this day, I don't know what possessed me to say those words, with adrenaline coursing through my veins. But when you go through a situation like that it stays with you.

I'm glad you're okay, Honor.

honorentheos and MeDotOrg, I'm highly impressed with your abilities to remain cool under fire, especially with only a split second to choose what to do or say. I'm even happier that you both made it out of those situations unscathed. Bravo to you!

Thank you, Jersey Girl. I appreciate that. I generally see people here separate from their positions, too.

I asked the officer who was drove me to verify the person in cuffs was the right guy if they had heard if they confirmed the guy was high or possibly having a mental episode. They hadn't heard. I felt bad for the guy. Not for how he was treated by the police or anything like that. They were professional. Just that it seemed like life had been a bit shittier to him than it had been to me, I guess.
Given your sympathy for the would be thief, I take it the suspect was some kind of minority. Am I right?
