Dear hauslern,
Universal Rule #10 of this message board states, "Do not EVER 'link-and-run.' If you post a link to something, always explain what's at the other end of the link, why it's important, and what you hope other readers / viewers learn from it. RULE OF THUMB: If it's not worth your time to describe it, then it's not worth our time to click on it."
Please go back and edit your post to include the above. More specifically, tell us the conclusions they draw.

The question of the authenticity of the Book of Mormon has beset Smith’s religion since the beginning, and this exact problem is how Dartmouth enters into the equation. I note that this article is not seeking to prove or disprove anything about the Book itself, but simply trying to explore, from a purely historical perspective, the role that Dartmouth may well have played in the history of the Book. The first link between Dartmouth and the Latter-Day Saint movement is Smith himself—he was born in 1805 in Sharon, Vermont, which is only about a half-hour drive from Hanover. However, the most important role that Dartmouth plays in one story of Smith’s movement relates to the origins of the Book of Mormon itself.

Re: The Spalding Theory again.
It's not really a "paper." It's an article from the Dartmouth Review, which is the student newspaper of Dartmouth. It provides a good summary of the theory, but doesn't really conclude anything other than "It would be cool if Rigdon wrote the Book of Mormon while he was a Dartmouth student."hauslern wrote: ↑Sat Nov 04, 2023 7:11 amHere is an interesting and timely paper.

Randy Bell has done a lot more interesting work on Dartmouth and Mormonism.Res Ipsa wrote: ↑Sat Nov 04, 2023 1:48 pmIt's not really a "paper." And may be additional confirmation, as per the brief excerpt of The Wicker Man’s extensive posts.https://slogbog.com/viewtopic.php?p=244 ... ting#p2441
. . . START OF RANT
The truth is that PPP had a sales/trade route that he traveled every year that went from around Palmyra NY to Sandusky OH. It is reported and testified to that Sidney Rigdon had a manuscript that he had copied from a manuscript that he had borrowed from a printer in Pittsburg. That manuscript supposedly was written by Solomon Spalding. There is testimony that Spalding's manuscript was the Book of Mormon without the theology. It is reported and testified to that Rigdon added text to his copy during sessions where he practised automatic writing.
Now without knowing any of this the Spirit told me, "that man is the source of the theology in the Book of Mormon". And that was during an LDS movie at the time that the Sidney Rigdon character first appeared on screen. I also did not know at that time about PPP and his wagon route between Palmyra and Sandusky. In the bishop's office when the bishop shared a quote by PPP the Spirit told me that PPP was the angel that brought the plates took them away and brought them back a year later. So it can be deduced that the 116 pages was really the complete manuscript that Martin Harris gave to his wife to read. And she traded it back to PPP on his way out of the area.
So first the Spirit tells me these things and later I find the verification . . .

Thanks! I see he’s been on MS and RFM. That led me to this paper: https://faenrandir.github.io/a_careful_ ... 06-JWH.pdf Interesting parallels between John Smith’s theology instructions at Dartmouth and early Mormonism. It seems the School of the Prophets was a copycat. Interesting stuff.Kishkumen wrote: ↑Sat Nov 04, 2023 10:31 pmRandy Bell has done a lot more interesting work on Dartmouth and Mormonism.Res Ipsa wrote: ↑Sat Nov 04, 2023 1:48 pmIt's not really a "paper." Re: The Spalding Theory again.
That is a fantastic paper. Back when I first heard Bell's podcast appearances, I realized I needed to read John Smith's writing. This article refreshes my memory regarding the need to do so. If Bell and this Behrens person are correct, John Smith taught so many doctrines that later appear in Mormonism that it cannot possibly be a coincidence. The Dartmouth connection is one of the most important discoveries about early Mormonism in recent memory. Mark my words: further work in this area will transform how we think about Mormonism's beginnings.Res Ipsa wrote: ↑Sun Nov 05, 2023 4:20 amThanks! I see he’s been on MS and RFM.
