Ah, now we’re getting somewhere on this thread.

What was the nature of God according to Creedal Christianity at the time of Joseph Smith? I think that needs to be determined up front.

You will most likely disagree.

Oh, and did what was being taught in regard to the Triune God come from the Bible?

ARE YOU A CREEDAL CHRISTIAN?

If so, no need to keep beating around the bush.

MG
I’m not necessarily a creedal Christian. I’m not even sure what you mean by that label.

My understanding of God begins with Jesus and his teachings, particularly the Father dwelling in the Son and Christ dwelling in the believer.

Now, what understanding of God did Joseph Smith actually restore?

C’mon, Limnor. You’re being coy with me. You’re a smart guy (although that was disguised somewhat in a couple of other threads recently).

And, you know what the LDS Church’s theology is. If not, go to the church’s website.

You know and I know the Triune God invented over time was a corruption of the God in the Bible. That needed a course correction.

It has been made.

It took some work, but we got there. Brings a whole new light to having been created in the image of God that I believe may have been corrupted and lost through the philosophies of men.

Honestly, what you said in your last post doesn’t make sense to me. More explanation?

There are numerous things you could have meant by the Restoration. Priesthood authority, ordinances, church organization, revelation, scripture, or the nature of God. I wasn’t asking you to explain Mormonism. I was asking you to identify what you were claiming had been lost and restored. Now that you’ve identified the nature of God, we can actually examine that claim.

I’m not being coy. I affirm the Trinity, but that doesn’t mean I align to the authority of historical church councils. And no, we don’t both know that the Trinity was a corruption of biblical Christianity. That’s your assertion, not a fact.

Here’s what I find interesting. You regard the development of Trinitarian theology as evidence of corruption, yet regard the development of Joseph Smith’s theology between 1830 and 1844 as evidence of restoration.

Why is theological development corruption in one case and revelation in the other?

That's a good question. First of all we would need to determine whether the original doctrines in the New Testament and those taught by the earliest church fathers such as Justin Martyr, Tertullian, and Origen (correct me if I'm wrong), were later changed and corrupted into something different...that made a difference...in the way God and His Son were recognized and worshipped.

If so, then it would seem that the only course correction would be 'true' would be a 'new revelation' in which God reveals Himself to mankind in a new dispensation. That is the message of the restoration.

Granted, it took a while for understanding to take place and further revelation to solidify the doctrine of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost being separate in being but one in purpose.

But we got there...and here we are.

Trinitarianism never made sense to me. One in all and all in one...or something like that. Your description, however short it has been to this point, doesn't make any more sense that trinitarianism to me. I would be happy to have you further elaborate and help us understand your understanding of the Godhead.

Any way we try and understand God is stretching the comprehension abilities of the human mind, but LDS theology (we are created in the image of God and Jesus Christ is God...but in His own right) makes more sense.

To me anyway. I'm happy to have someone else try and come up with and describe a more accurate and sensical description of God's nature and being than that taught in the CofJCofLDS.

I personally haven't seen or heard of it. I know there are some other Christians on this board. Maybe they could take a stab at it.

MG
