While Joseph remained here, the angel showed him by contrast, the difference between good and evil; and the consequenses which <would> follow both obedience and disobedience to the commandments of God, in such a striking and forcible manner, that the impression was always bright in his recolection, until the very end of his days. And, in giving a relation of this circumstance, not long prior to his death, he remarked: that ever afterwards he was willing to keep the commandments of God.
Gee, there is nothing like showing him his entire life in the future, both ways so as to LET him be FREE in his choice and live by FAITH not KNOWLEDGE as Mormons today teach is there...

Joseph was contemplating these stories several years before he got the plates. He was formulating ideas in his mind years before he ever met Oliver Cowdery or began any translation with Martin Harris. Smith spent years contemplating the story he knew he would someday tell the world in hopes of achieving his dreams.

How many times is "horses" mentioned in the Book of Mormon? Many times! Horses were used for multiple tasks and purposes. Everyone loves horses! Mother Smith explained rather forcefully:

"he would describe the ancient inhabitants of this continent; their dress, mode of travelling, and the animals upon which they rode; their cities, and their buildings, with every particular; he would describe their mode of warfare, as also their religious worship. This he would do with as much ease, seemingly, as if he had spent his whole life with them."

Thus we see that that the ancient Indians rode upon horses -- real horses, horses just like those that existed in Smith's neck of the woods. A horse is a horse of course, isn't that right mother Smith?

Thus we also see that young Joseph had years to contemplate how the ancient inhabitants of the American continent would engage in warfare and in what manner they would battle and take up arms. By the time Smith was ready to dictate to Harris & Cowdery he had already many stories in his head and with some notes in his hat he kept a tidy list and followed his timeline.

Temple of Nephi

And we all know that the most important building ever built by Nephi was the temple in the land of Nephi in which they could properly worship the LORD and live the law of Moses. I've discussed temple construction in great detail in this thread up in the Celestial Forum:

“I, Nephi, did build a temple; and I did construct it after the manner of the temple of Solomon”

It is plausible that young Joseph contemplated a Solomon like temple built in the land of promise many years before he translated the gold plates.

Joseph envisioned Indian tents in the land of Nephi

Post by Shulem »

Book of Mormon wrote:Now, the more idle part of the Lamanites lived in the wilderness, and dwelt in tents; and they were spread through the wilderness on the west, in the land of Nephi; yea, and also on the west of the land of Zarahemla, in the borders by the seashore, and on the west in the land of Nephi, in the place of their fathers’ first inheritance, and thus bordering along by the seashore.

The Neck

Post by Shulem »

Book of Mormon wrote:And now, it was only the distance of a day and a half’s journey for a Nephite, on the line Bountiful and the land Desolation, from the east to the west sea; and thus the land of Nephi and the land of Zarahemla were nearly surrounded by water, there being a small neck of land between the land northward and the land southward.

And it came to pass that the Nephites had inhabited the land Bountiful, even from the east unto the west sea, and thus the Nephites in their wisdom, with their guards and their armies, had hemmed in the Lamanites on the south, that thereby they should have no more possession on the north, that they might not overrun the land northward.

How do you overcome Smith using the names of towns and places in his neck of the woods to describe Book of Mormon towns and places? Couple that with the apparent layout of the Great Lakes mimicking the layout of Book of Mormon lands and it seems like the Heartlanders might have it right.

Hugh Nibley claimed he bumped into Adolf Hitler, Albert Einstein, Winston Churchill, Gertrude Stein, and the Grand Duke Vladimir Romanoff. Dishonesty is baked into Mormonism.

I'm so glad you returned and that's a good question. First, allow me to say that I believe the model I've presented in this thread can be vigorously defended by using the text of the Book of Mormon in PROPER perspective. Some LDS apologists have become so drunken in their views in interpreting Smith's words that they are like fools in a tavern living in a party set for a table of drunks. Heartlanders don't care about "evidence" as much as the Mesoamericans who have to have something archeological to cling to or their faith would whither and dry up. The whole LDS apologetic party scene is a joke. And some therein are very, very deceptive and clever!

Yes, names have been taken and reused or recycled from the far regions surrounding Joseph Smith's vicinity and the Vernal Holley map does show some proof of that. But really, what are names other than designations? The fact is that Smith considered himself the center of attention and by using names surrounding him and quietly and secretly implanting them into his geography of the Book of Mormon is nothing more than a play on words and a stroke to his ego. The joke is on anyone who thinks it's more than that!

Smith was good at what he did; fooling people.

Don't let Smith fool you, Doc!

So, in this proposed scenario, what do we do with the story of Hagoth, which doesn't fit the map? . . .

- Alma 63:5-6

A question? Oh, goody.

A "large" ship is relative to what one may conceive as being built by primitives. What is large? What was large to Joseph Smith who must have seen some ships in his own day traveling up and down the river in his own community. Where did they go after they launched and left the Chesapeake Bay? Well, out into the bay and up the river, north, onward they went. Up the Susquehanna River to Harrisburg or perhaps further into New York state.

Who can say?

"launched it forth into the west sea, by the narrow neck which led INTO the land northward"

Out into the sea and bay we go with our "large ship" filled with supplies.

The smell of the salty sea upon our face as we leave the west sea.

Up into the great river we will take our ship into the land northward.

What we discover and claim will be ours forever!
