What does the text say?

Post by Shulem »

Alma 22:27-34 wrote:27 And it came to pass that the king sent a proclamation throughout all the land, amongst all his people who were in all his land, who were in all the regions round about, which was bordering even to the sea, on the east and on the west, and which was divided from the land of Zarahemla by a narrow strip of wilderness, which ran from the sea east even to the sea west, and round about on the borders of the seashore, and the borders of the wilderness which was on the north by the land of Zarahemla, through the borders of Manti, by the head of the river Sidon, running from the east towards the west—and thus were the Lamanites and the Nephites divided.

28 Now, the more idle part of the Lamanites lived in the wilderness, and dwelt in tents; and they were spread through the wilderness on the west, in the land of Nephi; yea, and also on the west of the land of Zarahemla, in the borders by the seashore, and on the west in the land of Nephi, in the place of their fathers’ first inheritance, and thus bordering along by the seashore.

29 And also there were many Lamanites on the east by the seashore, whither the Nephites had driven them. And thus the Nephites were nearly surrounded by the Lamanites; nevertheless the Nephites had taken possession of all the northern parts of the land bordering on the wilderness, at the head of the river Sidon, from the east to the west, round about on the wilderness side; on the north, even until they came to the land which they called Bountiful.

30 And it bordered upon the land which they called Desolation, it being so far northward that it came into the land which had been peopled and been destroyed, of whose bones we have spoken, which was discovered by the people of Zarahemla, it being the place of their first landing.

31 And they came from there up into the south wilderness. Thus the land on the northward was called Desolation, and the land on the southward was called Bountiful, it being the wilderness which is filled with all manner of wild animals of every kind, a part of which had come from the land northward for food.

32 And now, it was only the distance of a day and a half’s journey for a Nephite, on the line Bountiful and the land Desolation, from the east to the west sea; and thus the land of Nephi and the land of Zarahemla were nearly surrounded by water, there being a small neck of land between the land northward and the land southward.

33 And it came to pass that the Nephites had inhabited the land Bountiful, even from the east unto the west sea, and thus the Nephites in their wisdom, with their guards and their armies, had hemmed in the Lamanites on the south, that thereby they should have no more possession on the north, that they might not overrun the land northward.

34 Therefore the Lamanites could have no more possessions only in the land of Nephi, and the wilderness round about. Now this was wisdom in the Nephites—as the Lamanites were an enemy to them, they would not suffer their afflictions on every hand, and also that they might have a country whither they might flee, according to their desires.

• The (converted) king of the Lamanites sent a proclamation throughout *all* the land in all the regions *round* about – from sea east to sea west.

• The territory which was bordering even to the *sea*, on the *east* and on the *west*, and which was divided from the land of Zarahemla by a narrow strip of wilderness, which ran from the sea east even to the sea west, and *round about* on the borders of the seashore, and the borders of the wilderness which was on the north by the land of Zarahemla, through the borders of Manti, by the head of the river Sidon, running from the east towards the west—and thus were the Lamanites and the Nephites divided.

• Idle Lamanites lived in the wilderness and were spread through the wilderness on the west of the land of Nephi; and on the west of the land of Zarahemla, in the borders by the seashore, and on the west in the land of Nephi, in their fathers’ first inheritance, and thus bordering along by the seashore.

• And also, there were many Lamanites on the east by the seashore, whither the Nephites had driven them. The "distance" is what it takes for a healthy man to march across the line from sea east to sea west. It's "the journey for a Nephite", one who is healthy and strong, an ordinary man, to make the march in average time. It's not a reference to a marathon or a race but the amount of time it takes an ordinary man to march the distance from point A to point B. That *IS* what Joseph Smith meant within the text of Alma with regards to the distance of the narrow neck.

Now YOU know!

Shipping expeditions

Post by Shulem »

Alma 63:7,8 wrote:And in the thirty and eighth year, this man built other ships. And the first ship did also return, and many more people did enter into it; and they also took much provisions, and set out again to the land northward.

And it came to pass that they were never heard of more. And we suppose that they were drowned in the depths of the sea. And it came to pass that one other ship also did sail forth; and whither she did go we know not.

Who else knew about the narrow neck?

Augustine Herman, First Lord of Bohemia Manor

Herman proposed that a waterway be built to connect the two.

I'm confident that Joseph Smith was aware of this geography and knew about the canal construction taking place prior to writing the Book of Mormon.

More surveys followed, and in 1804, construction of the canal began...

The canal company was reorganized in 1822, and new surveys determined...

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers played a vital yet unofficial role for the canal company in 1823 and 1824...

Canal construction resumed in April 1824, and within several years some 2,600 men...

Very interesting find as a possible muse map, Shulem.

Especially with natural bays, fed by rivers, on both sides, excellent places to land a ship. Back then, was this considered a natural port zone? Would ocean currents have brought wind swept travelers there?

Of course, the mental map may have served no more purpose than to anchor his mental diagram of a realistic but imaginary geography.

The Jaredites would have been in the north, no? Joseph’s neck of the wood? How does the Book of Mormon connect these two regions?

Isn’t the far south problematic?

How about river Sidon?

Gold or silver deposits in that region?

Any sacred Indian spaces on the peninsula? Any ruins or evidence of Indian villages? What were their names? What about old weapon finds?

What tribes lived in that area in Joseph’s day?

All these are wonderful questions and I thank you for posing them. They can all be answered without much difficulty. But first, let me clarify that Smith used this geography for his imaginary story to write his novel. The Book of Mormon is not historical and there is no actual archeological evidence in the dirt that can substantiate the claims made in the text because the whole thing is just a story based on faith. This scares apologists to death as so many of them hide their heads in the ground down in Mesoamerica thinking that was the original land of promise. The Heartlanders have developed a map that can only work in dreams, not in reality -- much like a cartoon.

I look forward to answering all your questions in time.

Thank you! And I hope you enjoyed your prize.

Dr Moore,

There are many connections which can be made but I think you should get a load of this one in order to understand how Joseph Smith viewed the whole region. Buckle up for the ride!

Ether 9:3

And the Lord warned Omer in a dream that he should depart out of the land; wherefore Omer departed out of the land with his family, and traveled many days, and came over and passed by the hill of Shim, and came over by the place where the Nephites were destroyed, and from thence eastward, and came to a place which was called Ablom, by the seashore, and there he pitched his tent, and also his sons and his daughters, and all his household, save it were Jared and his family.

I strongly suspect that Ablom = Boston Salem Massachusetts

Lehi landed on the southern end of the peninsula at the base which is Virginia's tip. That is the cradle or the birthplace in which the Nephite civilization began. From that point, facing the south sea there was no where to go other than due north. Hence, to go forth out of the original landing spot was to venture forth out of the land of Lehi's burial and into the other lands consisting of Zarahemla and Bountiful and then through the narrow neck leading to the land of the north. Once one passed through the narrow neck they are now on the open continent in which they may go north or turn east or west and eventually cross rivers and from there go south into Jersey or Maryland. But ultimately it was all the land of promise (USA) and that is what was *in* the heart of Joseph Smith's secret geographical narrative. The Tehuantepec and Yucatan base have absolutely nothing to do with Smith's Book of Mormon. It was the farthest thing from his mind at that time.

Smith was very creative and quite brilliant.

I thought there were wild beasts to the south. Maybe I’m misremembering the verse.

Hmmm. Wild beasts. Let's see.

:P

Mosiah 18:4, 5, 16, 30-35 wrote:4 And it came to pass that as many as did believe him did go forth to a place which was called Mormon, having received its name from the king, being in the borders of the land having been infested, by times or at seasons, by wild beasts.

5 Now, there was in Mormon a fountain of pure water, and Alma resorted thither, there being near the water a thicket of small trees, where he did hide himself in the daytime from the searches of the king.

16 And after this manner he did baptize every one that went forth to the place of Mormon; and they were in number about two hundred and four souls; yea, and they were baptized in the waters of Mormon, and were filled with the grace of God.

30 And now it came to pass that all this was done in Mormon, yea, by the waters of Mormon, in the forest that was near the waters of Mormon; yea, the place of Mormon, the waters of Mormon, the forest of Mormon, how beautiful are they to the eyes of them who there came to the knowledge of their Redeemer; yea, and how blessed are they, for they shall sing to his praise forever.

31 And these things were done in the borders of the land, that they might not come to the knowledge of the king.

32 But behold, it came to pass that the king, having discovered a movement among the people, sent his servants to watch them. Therefore on the day that they were assembling themselves together to hear the word of the Lord they were discovered unto the king.

33 And now the king said that Alma was stirring up the people to rebellion against him; therefore he sent his army to destroy them.

34 And it came to pass that Alma and the people of the Lord were apprised of the coming of the king’s army; therefore they took their tents and their families and departed into the wilderness.

35 And they were in number about four hundred and fifty souls.

• Place called Mormon at the borders of the land – infested at times and seasons by wild beasts
• Alma hides in a small thicket of trees near a fountain of pure water in the waters of Mormon
• Alma and his baptized converts of 204 souls hide in the forests of Mormon
• Alma and his church of 450 souls took their tents and departed into the wilderness

Alma 2:15-38 wrote:15 And it came to pass that the Amlicites came upon the hill Amnihu, which was east of the river Sidon, which ran by the land of Zarahemla, and there they began to make war with the Nephites.

16 Now Alma, being the chief judge and the governor of the people of Nephi, therefore he went up with his people, yea, with his captains, and chief captains, yea, at the head of his armies, against the Amlicites to battle.

17 And they began to slay the Amlicites upon the hill east of Sidon. And the Amlicites did contend with the Nephites with great strength, insomuch that many of the Nephites did fall before the Amlicites.

18 Nevertheless the Lord did strengthen the hand of the Nephites, that they slew the Amlicites with great slaughter, that they began to flee before them.

19 And it came to pass that the Nephites did pursue the Amlicites all that day, and did slay them with much slaughter, insomuch that there were slain of the Amlicites twelve thousand five hundred thirty and two souls; and there were slain of the Nephites six thousand five hundred sixty and two souls.

20 And it came to pass that when Alma could pursue the Amlicites no longer he caused that his people should pitch their tents in the valley of Gideon, the valley being called after that Gideon who was slain by the hand of Nehor with the sword; and in this valley the Nephites did pitch their tents for the night.

21 And Alma sent spies to follow the remnant of the Amlicites, that he might know of their plans and their plots, whereby he might guard himself against them, that he might preserve his people from being destroyed.

22 Now those whom he had sent out to watch the camp of the Amlicites were called Zeram, and Amnor, and Manti, and Limher; these were they who went out with their men to watch the camp of the Amlicites.

23 And it came to pass that on the morrow they returned into the camp of the Nephites in great haste, being greatly astonished, and struck with much fear, saying:

24 Behold, we followed the camp of the Amlicites, and to our great astonishment, in the land of Minon, above the land of Zarahemla, in the course of the land of Nephi, we saw a numerous host of the Lamanites; and behold, the Amlicites have joined them;

25 And they are upon our brethren in that land; and they are fleeing before them with their flocks, and their wives, and their children, towards our city; and except we make haste they obtain possession of our city, and our fathers, and our wives, and our children be slain.

26 And it came to pass that the people of Nephi took their tents, and departed out of the valley of Gideon towards their city, which was the city of Zarahemla.

27 And behold, as they were crossing the river Sidon, the Lamanites and the Amlicites, being as numerous almost, as it were, as the sands of the sea, came upon them to destroy them.

34 And thus he cleared the ground, or rather the bank, which was on the west of the river Sidon, throwing the bodies of the Lamanites who had been slain into the waters of Sidon, that thereby his people might have room to cross and contend with the Lamanites and the Amlicites on the west side of the river Sidon.

35 And it came to pass that when they had all crossed the river Sidon that the Lamanites and the Amlicites began to flee before them, notwithstanding they were so numerous that they could not be numbered.

36 And they fled before the Nephites towards the wilderness which was west and north, away beyond the borders of the land; and the Nephites did pursue them with their might, and did slay them.

37 Yea, they were met on every hand, and slain and driven, until they were scattered on the west, and on the north, until they had reached the wilderness, which was called Hermounts; and it was that part of the wilderness which was infested by wild and ravenous beasts.

38 And it came to pass that many died in the wilderness of their wounds, and were devoured by those beasts and also the vultures of the air; and their bones have been found, and have been heaped up on the earth.

• Amlicites rebel and prepare to attack the city of Zarahemla and the appointed leaders
• Amlicites start their insurrection at the hill Amnihu - east of the river Sidon which ran by the land of Zarahemla
• Alma takes his armies and heads up to the hill Amnihu – war ensues and Alma pursues the fleeing Amlicites
• 12,532 Amlicites slain
• 6,562 Nephites slain
• Alma’s army stops the pursuit to pitch camp in the valley of Gideon for the night
• Alma sent spies to scope out the camp of the Amlicites
• Alma’s spies rush back the next morning upon learning the Amlicites have joined the Lamanites
• Amlicites joined a numerous Lamanite army in the land of Minon above the land of Zarahemla in the course of the land of Nephi
• The Nephites in Minon are fleeing before the invading armies with their flocks and are heading towards Zarahemla
• Alma’s army disbanded their camp in the valley of Gideon and head towards Zarahemla to prevent the city from being taken
• Alma is attacked by the Lamanites and Amlicites as they are crossing the river Sidon
• Alma’s forces fight and clear the ground along the west river bank by throwing the bodies of the Lamanites into the river
• Alma’s army continues to cross the river to the west side and pursue the fleeing Lamanites
• Lamanites flee towards the wilderness which was west and north, away from the borders of the land – Nephites continue to pursue
• Lamanites are slain and driven, until they were scattered on the west, and on the north, until the reached the wilderness of Hermounts – a place infested by wild beasts
• Many died in the wilderness of their wounds and were devoured by beasts and vultures

Alma 16:2, 3, 6-15 wrote:2 For behold, the armies of the Lamanites had come in upon the wilderness side, into the borders of the land, even into the city of Ammonihah, and began to slay the people and destroy the city.

3 And now it came to pass, before the Nephites could raise a sufficient army to drive them out of the land, they had destroyed the people who were in the city of Ammonihah, and also some around the borders of Noah, and taken others captive into the wilderness.

6 And it came to pass that Alma inquired of the Lord concerning the matter. And Alma returned and said unto them: Behold, the Lamanites will cross the river Sidon in the south wilderness, away up beyond the borders of the land of Manti. And behold there shall ye meet them, on the east of the river Sidon, and there the Lord will deliver unto thee thy brethren who have been taken captive by the Lamanites.

7 And it came to pass that Zoram and his sons crossed over the river Sidon, with their armies, and marched away beyond the borders of Manti into the south wilderness, which was on the east side of the river Sidon.

8 And they came upon the armies of the Lamanites, and the Lamanites were scattered and driven into the wilderness; and they took their brethren who had been taken captive by the Lamanites, and there was not one soul of them had been lost that were taken captive. And they were brought by their brethren to possess their own lands.

9 And thus ended the eleventh year of the judges, the Lamanites having been driven out of the land, and the people of Ammonihah were destroyed; yea, every living soul of the Ammonihahites was destroyed, and also their great city, which they said God could not destroy, because of its greatness.

10 But behold, in one day it was left desolate; and the carcases were mangled by dogs and wild beasts of the wilderness.

11 Nevertheless, after many days their dead bodies were heaped up upon the face of the earth, and they were covered with a shallow covering. And now so great was the scent thereof that the people did not go in to possess the land of Ammonihah for many years. And it was called Desolation of Nehors; for they were of the profession of Nehor, who were slain; and their lands remained desolate.

13 And Alma and Amulek went forth preaching repentance to the people in their temples, and in their sanctuaries, and also in their synagogues, which were built after the manner of the Jews.

14 And as many as would hear their words, unto them they did impart the word of God, without any respect of persons, continually.

15 And thus did Alma and Amulek go forth, and also many more who had been chosen for the work, to preach the word throughout all the land. And the establishment of the church became general throughout the land, in all the region round about, among all the people of the Nephites.

• Armies of the Lamanites come in from the wilderness side and destroy the city of Ammonihah and wreak havoc around the borders of Noah
• Alma revealed that the Lamanites will cross the river Sidon in the south wilderness, way up beyond the borders of Manti.
• Alma instructs captain Zoram to cross over the river Sidon and march away beyond the borders of Manti into the south wilderness and meet the Lamanites on the east of the river Sidon
• Lamanites are driven out and the captives are recovered
• Every living soul in Ammonihah was killed and the carcases were mangled by dogs and wild beasts
• Bodies were hastily buried under shallow covering – the scent permeated the land
• Alma went about the region and preached in the temples and sanctuaries of the people

It appears the wild beasts in this narrative are north of the cradle of Lehi.
