If I remember correctly it's a phinney 1824 with the Apocrypha. It's the first Bible I bought that had a families history written down in it and now I'm addicted to Bible's with lengthy family history records. I have four now with family history records.Fence Sitter wrote: ↑Tue Aug 10, 2021 2:41 pmWelcome,Atlanticmike wrote: ↑Sun Aug 08, 2021 5:06 pmAnd saying thank you for all the wonderful content here on the terrestrial forum. I joined this board about a month ago and I've really enjoyed reading through some of the interesting post found here because I don't get to discuss topics in my daily life that I find here in the terrestrial. But up till today I've stayed down in spirit paradise where I belong. Lem called me up here by calling me a troll in front of all you guys and I thought it would be a good time to introduce myself. I'm a lifelong Mormon who just exited a faith crisis and I've decided to stay a member of the church for now. The past 9 months I've probably watched or listened to at least 1000hrs of podcast. I've ordered way to many books from eBay that I don't need including a first addition Mormon Doctrine by Bruce R that cost me $180. Yes, I know I'm an idiot for buying that book, trust me, my wife has told me I'm an idiot for that purchase at least a dozen times. Don't tell my wife but I also bought the exact kind of Bible that Joseph apparently used to help him in his translation. I'm not going to tell you what I paid for it in case my wife is reading this. I'm at peace with my decision to stay in the church even though Dr. Shades accused me of starting my own religion apparently because I have drifted so far away from "mainstream" Mormon beliefs. I still love ya Dr. Shades
. Anyways! If I contribute here I'm leaving all the spirit paradise drama in spirit paradise, in my opinion there's no need for that crap to come up here. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
I too collect bibles that Joseph Smith owned. From what I know he owned three different ones. The one you metion must be the Phinney Bible as it was the one he is known to have owned in 1829 when he was working of the translation of the Bible.. Can you tell me what year it is? I happen to own several.

dastardly stem, are you actually Scott Lloyd in disguise and have now followed me over here from MD&D so you can keep picking on my terrible grammar and punctuation skills??dastardly stem wrote: ↑Tue Aug 10, 2021 2:29 pmWelcome, Mike.
Why are you guys so personally upset that most of us in the Terrestrial forum have no desire whatsoever to peek into the Paradise forum and pretend that drama is interesting? I mean I get Lem brought it here into one thread when she talked about a couple of trolls, which I assume is you and Cultellus. Can we at minimum leave it in that thread?
Also, I hate to be that guy, but, could you please fix all of your "could ofs" to "could haves"? It's eating at me like nothing has before.

Well shoot my worst fear just came true--getting associated with Scott. I knew I shouldn't have hit send...I just knew it.Atlanticmike wrote: ↑Tue Aug 10, 2021 3:17 pm
dastardly stem, are you actually Scott Lloyd in disguise and have now followed me over here from MD&D so you can keep picking on my terrible grammar and punctuation skills??. Just kidding. I drove Scott crazy with my "unique" writing skills. Tell ya what, I'll work on my grammar in the next couple of days. But, I don't mind constructive criticism and if you want to save me the time of researching what the heck you are talking about feel free to give me a free lesson.
Anyway, I think you can technically get away with "could've", at least according to some. Others disagree. I think I should just drop it. It's a page away now and I really hate being that guy.

I feel for ya, Stem. There are some grammar errors that are like fingernails on a chalkboard. I let Shades be that guy, though. He does a pretty good job.dastardly stem wrote: ↑Tue Aug 10, 2021 4:02 pmWell shoot my worst fear just came true--getting associated with Scott. Look, if it drives you crazy, correct me, seriously, it won't hurt my feelings. I don't mind learning. My grammar skills suck. I don't even care if you message me to correct me. I actually told Scott the same thing when he and I discussed it. And just so you know, every post is from my phone and if it's during the day I'm usually speaking in my phone then adding punctuation afterwards before pushing the submit button. And on top of that, I'm usually on a roof.dastardly stem wrote: ↑Tue Aug 10, 2021 4:02 pmWell shoot my worst fear just came true--getting associated with Scott. Thanks Ceeboo, ceeboo wrote: ↑Tue Aug 10, 2021 3:04 pmHey FS - Good to see that you're on this newish board.
I'm not sure if you would be interested in sharing more information about your Bible collection, but if you would be, I would really enjoy learning a lot more about it. Perhaps a new thread? (If you are interested)Fence Sitter wrote: ↑Tue Aug 10, 2021 2:41 pmI too collect bibles that Joseph Smith owned. From what I know he owned three different ones. by the way - How do we know what bibles Joseph Smith owned?
Thanks!
We know a lot about the books Smith owned and or used throughout his life from a variety of historical sources. There are lists of books he owned, there are extensive quotes in written works he produced that can be sourced to books like Clarke' Bible Dictionary, Dick's Philosophy of the Future State or Mosheims Ecclesiastical History to name just a few and he is know to have quoted from contempray workd in his speaches. In this case we know exactly which Bible he used in 1829 and on to produce his translation of the Bible becuase it is still around and even has some of his markups in it from the translation work. It is owned by the COC church. It was an 1828 editon of the Phinney Bible. There are also high quality photographic reproductions of it here.
I do not own an 1828 edcition (they are pricey) but I do have an 1823, 1842, 1843 & 1845 quarto size versions as well as a 1840ish version of a pocket size New Testament published by Phinney. The Phinney Bibles are interesting because there employed a new technology backthen called sterotyping. Instead of setting type for each page, the printer used a solid plate called a cliché and was able to make exact reproductions of bibles. The same set of plates used for the Smith Bible were used by Phinney from about 1823 to 1850s when they destroyed in a fire, so any Phinney quarto size Bible printed in that time fram has the exact same text as the one used by Smith. There are some difference in what extra material might be included, Cheaper versions didn't have the apocrypha, space for geneology or many pictures. One coud pay extra to get a version with more pictures, the apocrypha and other things.

Wow! That's all fascinating. I am quite ignorant to much/most of this. Thanks for all the information as well as the link (will check it out later)Fence Sitter wrote: ↑Tue Aug 10, 2021 5:04 pm

So the one that still has some of Joseph Smith's markups in it - you say it's owned by the COC church (Not sure what COC stands for?) - I would imagine that this extremely valuable (in dollars) yes?
I find all of this so interesting. Again, I will admit total ignorance to much of this.I do not own an 1828 edcition (they are pricey) but I do have an 1823, 1842, 1843 & 1845 quarto size versions as well as a 1840ish version of a pocket size New Testament published by Phinney. Speaking of apocrypha, and it appears you’re dialed into Bible things, so do you know if the apocrypha, any of its ideas, snuck into Mormon ideology?Fence Sitter wrote: ↑Tue Aug 10, 2021 5:04 pmOne coud pay extra to get a version with more pictures, the apocrypha and other things.

Hugh Nibley claimed he bumped into Adolf Hitler, Albert Einstein, Winston Churchill, Gertrude Stein, and the Grand Duke Vladimir Romanoff. Dishonesty is baked into Mormonism.
