When it comes to elections or sports, I play a little game in my head. If I really want someone to win, I play down their chances. There were a lot of good reasons to do that in Georgia, traditionally a very red state.

The GOP knew what was on the line in Georgia. The Democrats were not going to sneak up on them or catch them unawares. Everyone knew these two elections were for all the marbles. And given the current political structure in the state, the home field advantage defintely went to the GOP. Sometimes Democrats who vote in the general election will not show up for the runoff.

I went to bed last night thinking Ossof would lose. This morning, I still find myself tamping down my hopes. It still feels like it's not quite over.

In our country's history, the fulcrum of the balance of power rests in different places, like Florida in the 2000 election. This year it's Georgia. Part of the Republican dominance in Georgia was psychological. Ever since Sherman burned Atlanta and cut a swath of destruction to the coast, part of Georgia has burned with emnity towards blacks and northerners. Georgians may have lost the Confederacy, but after the Tilden-Hayes election of 1876, reconstruction was dead and whites regained control, literally with a vengeance.

I remember on 9/11 predicting that people would remember the date Sept 11, not having any idea the event would actually be named after the date. I'm not sure about 1/6, but I don't think people will forget today for a very long time.
