Actually, it's more a product of the culture of Utah County.

Aside from the Osmonds, Robert Redford is one of Utah County's most prominent citizens. His position as champion of environmental causes in Utah certainly makes him one of its most controversial in the process. Most people who live in Utah County know he's there, up in Provo Canyon, and that he built from what used to be a couple of acres of land, and eventually, a second hand ski resort, a world class destination which now encompasses an institute for independent filmmakers.

He's had plenty of experience with Mormons and things Mormon, knows the history, the culture and the theology. When LDS Church leadership saw him as a golden prospect being married to an LDS woman (just like their boy Larry King these days), they sent in their best men to try to convert him. His former wife is equally well known in many circles, went on to get her Ph.D. in history after her divorce, and is published on Mormon history.

For years he's employed Mormons and worked alongside them. He knows the system.

Whatever personal kneejerk he has regarding Mitt Romney when asked about him likely comes from a place of experience. Robert Redford had concerns about the Winter Olympics coming to Salt Lake City. So he has an opinion about a presidential candidate, and no surprise, he comments on one aspect of Mitt's background (missionary training) that contributed to the candidate he is today. Maybe if he'd been asked about Steven Covey, or Kurt Bestor, or some other high profile Latter-day Saint, his response might have been different. No surprise there at all.

Romney owns real estate in both Park City and Salt Lake City, so to those who are surprised that someone in (as they perceive it Hollywood, but in reality, Utah) is asked about someone in (as they perceive it Massachusetts, but again, in reality, Utah), it's not all that unusual.

And for those who apparently don't remember, Mitt Romney is not the first Mormon candidate for the highest office in the land. His father, George Romney, ran before him, and in more recent years, Utah Senator Orrin Hatch was also a candidate.

Go back several years and you'll note that Robert Redford has also commented on the good Senator Hatch.

Yes, but, again, being Hollywood, that's pretty much of a given. Like many leftists, Redford has only a cartoonish understanding of those with whom he disagrees politically.

I have to take this at face value. I've never met anyone with more experience with having a cartoonish understanding of most topics than Coggins, which pretty much makes him an expert on the subject, at least, in a cartoonish kind of way.

Absolutely.

Here's an article in the New York Times from 1982 where Redford has something to say about longtime acquaintance Orrin Hatch.

Hollywood? My understanding is that Redford has very little to do with Hollywood at all. Where do you get that idea from?
