Nevo -

Are you suggesting that cults that infamously have engaged in self-castration are just filled with schizophrenics experiencing psychotic symptoms? Because I'm quite positive we can trivially point out this is false.

I wasn't aware there were such cults. I thought beastie was referring to poor souls like W.C. Minor.

Nevo,

Before defending the idea that God can or does correctly convey his will to human beings, perhaps you ought to spend some time studying religions in which God has supposedly done just that, other than your own.

Heaven's Gate is the most obvious recent example, but it is a practice that reaches back in history as well.

by the way, I never heard of WC Minor.

Well, Heaven's Gate had other people perform the castrations. I also do not think the idea was claimed as inspired by God. That said, self-castration in religion comes up from time to time. I thought it came up on occasion in early Christianity when ennuchs were more common. I'd expect Nevo to know more about that than I.

This quote is awesome:

When I have a little more time, I'll get some examples of religious castration movements.

The fact that they got someone else to perform the castration seems like quibbling to me. They certainly wanted to have the castration done for religious reasons.

While their higher power may have been different than the Judeo-Christian idea of "God", the primary notion behind it all is the same - some higher being communicating its will to human beings, whether directly or through an intermediary.

It is clear that there are those men who would gladly sacrifice their young daughers to please God or gain some sort of eternal reward.

Men giving their young daughters to old men to rape, use, and abuse is nothing new. So long as the father gets a reward seems the daughter's welfare is irrelevant.

Obeying to get a reward Trump's the care of a girl child.

I am completely amazed and sickened that some old (or young) fathers think there is something even remotely acceptable in allowing a young girl to be sexually used by old men. I truly find this astounding.

Over the last few months as I've read various supporters of the FLDS rationalize the behavior of old men raping girls as young as twelve years old, I can't help but wonder what is wrong with human beings that they can put their own desire for an eternal reward over the care of a child.

It is revolting.

Any decent father would protect and care for his daughter... not even consider the possibility of trading her sexuality for his own reward.

Oh, it's quibbling. I just mentioned it because the quote was "cut his own balls off." As far as the point being made is concerned, all that matters is that it was voluntary.

I'm not sure if they were inspired to castrate by a revelation-like process. I'm not clear on this point, but I thought they reasoned it out themselves. ("It's going to be so awesome, you won't even want your balls!"). There have been castration required monastaries and the like, so we should focus on them.

Is this the real Selek, of MAD fame?
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

It sure sounds like him doesn't it? Writing "god" with a lower case "g," calling President Monson an "old codger". . .

I'm with B&L. I don't see a problem with it. If God asks us to do something, we should try to do it.
Let me clarify.

There are many crackpot leaders with masses of mindless fools who follow them. I did not insinuate that I would do what Monson asked as I see him as a crackpot leader of a cult.

What I meant was me being a non believer in Mormonism did not wrestle with the concept in my mind because I do not have an explicit need to believe.

in my opinion, anyone who turns their daughter over to a crusty old religious nutcase should have their parental rights revoked for life.
