The consequence here is something BYU has always been open about. BYU feels that their answer to "liberal arts" includes the intangible obedience to the laws of an angry God, redacted and magnified by wicked, controlling priests. And the diploma they offer doesn't just represent academic achievement but purity of living.

Well, everyone who goes to BYU agrees to those terms, they aren't forced.

I was totally unaware of all of this. Fortunately, I obtained my degree from the University of Brickbats. (Ph.D)

Sorry, folks, but this is all totally, totally weird to me. I went to a "secular" university in the mid-1980s, and if they had demanded that part of that "commitment" was to retain a belief in a particular religion, I would have told them where to stick their policies. I suppose that's the difference between a secular, and a religious university.

In education as in all things: you get what you pay for. Chad paid for the privilege of obeying BYU's rules. Now he's paying again.

Why anyone would choose a BYU education is beyond me. This kind of crap is just... crap.

I have heard of secular universities revoking diplomas for serious academic offenses, such as plagiarism. But, obviously, no secular university is going to alter somebody's grade (and is that really what happened?) simply because they publish a beefcake calendar.

This whole thing reminds me of the incredibly abrupt firing of Jeffrey Nielson after he publicly opposed the Church's stance on homosexuality. BYU was, in effect, canning somebody right at the beginning of the summer term, which has always seemed to me like an incredibly risky move. It says that BYU is more interested in ensuring full and complete adherence to orthodoxy than it is in providing students with a teacher.

What planet do you live on?

Of course BYU is more interested in orthodoxy than anything else. Orthodoxy is why they exist.

Lol. Well, I live on planet Earth, rather than Kolob, which is perhaps why I find such BYU practices to be odd/annoying.
