When I ask why, she just says, "I don't know. I just believe that."

I suspect that most members feel the same way.

"I don't believe we'll have to live polygamy."
"Why?"
"Just because."

I meant that the wife has to have died before the surviving husband can be sealed to another. Sorry for not being clear.

I'm sorry but that is incorrect. A man can be divorced from a living woman remain sealed to her AND become legally married and sealed to another women. There are men who are even sealed to more than two living women, although I'm sure that is pretty rare.

They are LEGALLY married to ONE living woman, but remain SEALED to more than one living woman. It can and does occur.

But where exactly does that come from? A conference talk? Extrapolating from abandoned justifications for 19th century polygamy?

I have had some non Mormons tell me they would be Mormon if they brought back polygamy because they think that is pretty cool!

I'll have to look that up. I was under the impression that you couldn't get sealed to a second living spouse until your sealing was canceled. I think that applies to both husband and wife.

ETA: I looked it up in the Handbook. You're right. The wife needs a cancellation; the husband needs only a sealing clearance.

Please do because I know several women in the situation and it would be interesting if the church is going against its own policy.

They only need to get "clearance" not a cancellation.

Unlike some people I know, I have no problem admitting when I'm wrong (which is often). :-)

Love you, too.

I kinda have to side with Mormons on polygamy, or at least with their prophets Joseph Smith and Young. There is tons of evidence for shag'n down with a bunch of wives in the Bible, and only one prohibition that I know of, and that is for leaders in the church.
..must make sacrifice of his own life to atone. for the blood of Christ alone under certain circumstances will not avail." - Bruce R. McConkie

And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven, … Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man (a.k.a., Jesus) will be forgiven (Matthew 12:31-32).
