I wonder why Will/Wheat jumped to mind when I read this...

Is there any connection between Jonathan Dunham's death and blood atonement? Jonathan Dunham was the Danite who ignored Joseph Smith's instructions to bring the Nauvoo Legion to rescue Joseph Smith at Carthage.

Utah had the firing squad method of execution for many years. It was the blood atoning option for the dead men walking. While this method drew fire from critics claiming it to be an overly brutal form of execution, it was preferred due to all the paperwork required by the Département des brevets français for use of a guillotine.

You would think that department would be able to just cut through all the paper work.

Sorry couldn't resist

It still has it.

Like you, I’ve also been reading Answer Then Nothing--I love my Kindle! For me, one of the more eye-opening aspects involves the tacit & creepy relationship between the FLDS and their mainstream Mormon sympathizers in St. George. Polygamist sympathizers, the authors claim, have infiltrated the cops & courts of St. George to such a degree that refugees like Carol Jessop can expect virtually no support from the authorities until they reach Las Vegas. Even worse, polygamy-friendly courts in St. George summarily return under-aged refugees to abusive homes without due process.

Did Brigham Young know of people who'd been "blood atoned?"

Well, did the Mountain Meadows Massacre include the blood atonement of apostate refugees who had joined the Fancher train? If it did then it would count as a case of Brigham knowing of people who’d been blood atoned…albeit after the fact.

Perhaps it is a good thing Utah has kept this tried and true route of blood atonement, rather than raising the gallows and lengthening the rope so heads would pop off in order to accomplish the same task. Lethal injection even if sloppily done will only produce minimal bleeding at the injection site.***
