Coffee vs. Chocolate: A Guide to the Word of Wisdom

When I was going through my religious questioning phase, I accepted a visit from two lovely LDS missionary girls. I ended up spending quite a bit of time with them. When I asked them specifically about the apparent contradiction with coffee and chocolate, they told me that coffee has tannic acid in it, and that is why it is prohibited.
Eventually we parted ways when I could not get some straight answers, but I remember this answer from them because I had to look up tannic acid to see what it really was.
Now, I am not taking Wikipedia as perfect knowledge, but ironically, it says that tannins are not found in most coffees, as previously thought. However, chocolate liquor has a decent amount, as well as many healthy fruits, fruit juices, and even tea...which I think is still "legal". This just further suggested to me that even the LDS church people do not know exactly what or why they believe or do what they do. They do know how to spend some outrageous money on beautiful buildings though...shame we don't need more of those in this world!

Thanks for posting.

Stick around here long and you will find a lot more ways in which the make-it-up-as-you-go-along doctrine of the LDS Church encourages one to ignore facts in favor of faith. Problem is that sometimes (I would say often) this works to the clear detriment of the faithful members.

Having been born in the Church, I did not discover wonders of coffee until later in life. Turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. Maybe if Mormons consumed a little healthful coffee, they would need less unhealthy religion to make it through their day.
