Re: 9 story MTC scrapped
First they say they won't build it that big. Then they change their mind. Mormon neighbors get mad, Mormon neighbors get served with an "Invitation" which was nothing more than coercement. Now the Cult changed the missionary age to 18 and changed their mind about the building.
It's not over yet. I'm sure in a couple years they'll have a lot of empty lease spaces at the great and spacious mall.

PROVO, Utah – The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has decided against building a controversial 9-story Missionary Training Center in Provo.
The 160-foot building was proposed because the current MTC building’s infrastructure is failing, but nearby residents complained that it would ruin their view and that it goes against a promise that no building would exceed four stories.
“The concerns we have as a neighborhood is the urbanization impact it has on a very unique neighborhood in Provo city and indeed the surrounding Provo city area,” said R. Paul Evans, Chair of the Provo City Pleasant View Neighborhood Council, during a protest in mid-May.
The LDS church announced Friday that, among other reasons, concern from the community made them change their plan to build the new building.
“There has been a great deal of discussion regarding the Church’s proposal to construct a new building at the Provo Missionary Training Center. Church leaders have determined that, due to a number of complexities and concerns, we will not move forward with the nine-story building originally proposed,” said Michael Purdy, spokesperson for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in a statement released Friday.
“Expansion of the MTC is necessary but we are confident we can find a solution that builds upon the long-standing working relationship between the MTC, BYU, and the community at large. We look forward to further discussions as the process moves forward.”
The announcement comes less than a week after LDS President Thomas S. Monson announced younger age requirements for missionaries. Young men are now allowed to serve a mission at 18 and young women can serve at 19.
This has got nothing to do with community concerns.
It would be interesting to know what those 'other reasons' were, lack of funds perhaps...lack of missionaries...maybe...
One might also enquire why God didn't see this coming and pull the project before inception...
“We look to not only the spiritual but also the temporal, and we believe that a person who is impoverished temporally cannot blossom spiritually.”

Have the Mormon saps yet claimed that this was all just a test of faith by elohim of those Mormons that live near the MTC? Pulled the plug at the last minute as with Abraham? How did the Mormon neighbors of the MTC fare their test?

I wonder why they would pull the plug and at the same time announce the lowering of the age requirements. Certainly they have to know that in the next couple of years their numbers of missionaries are going to be very high as the group that can now go earlier will overlap with the ones that had to wait. Even so the numbers are bound to go up based on the new age requirements.

The decision is because the group bolded is diminishing severely. A large proportion of the ones waiting till age 19 ultimately don't end up going. The Church wants to strike whilst the irons hot and get them into the field before they change there mind during that 'gap' year.
Once they get them on a mission they are less likely to leave the Church.

It was merely a test for the members in the neighborhood.

Doesn't seem they fared as well as Abraham.

You and I agree on why they lowered the age, but it seems strange they would also pull the plug on the new MTC building at the same time. I would think they instead of pulling the plug they would have announced, by revelation, an accelerated building schedule for it.

I guess that's why I am interested in what the 'other reasons' might be.
Perhaps the Mall has soaked up more money than was expected. I suspect it will be a money challenge that has caused the U turn.

I appreciate that the church stopped trying to bully the neighborhood. It's nice to know they're not completely insensitive. Of course this change of plans probably doesn't have anything to do with public opinion, or the the neighborhood. It might just be that they don't want to spend that much money right now, or that they don't have the money, or that they're coming up with a bigger, better plan for housing all of those young teenagers.
Wow. That little stone which was cut out of the mountain without hands is really rolling forth these days. Not.
