The elephant in the room for the CoJCoLDS is that it will remain inexorably in a kind of death spiral until it abandons a succession policy that guarantees leadership by old, frail, out of touch (and sometimes demented) individuals.

The misfortune endured by these octogenarian cabals is further exacerbated by the fact that they can't have the benefit of younger (under the age of 60), more vigorous, and better educated individuals as counselors or authorized advisors.

Self-inflicted wounds.

The common good in all society is to view the aged as wise and thus everyone appreciates the wisdom that comes from those who have reached the twilight of their lives wherein they can distill their wisdom on the rest of humanity. But in the case of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints having a leadership working in concert with a law firm is completely out of touch with the evolving reality of a a changing world and the needs of the rising generation which has no interest in business as usual. The planet is evolving and going through huge changes. The LDS church is being left behind. It's going to be stuck with a couple hundred beautiful yet strange looking buildings (temples) that for the most part remain empty and not used. What a waste.
