I'm an RN and I work on a respiratory unit/LTAC overflow (thanks to private insurance denying the proper amount of days in LTAC). I've seen a lot of people die. I've seen suffering you can't imagine. I've also had COVID. I "recovered" and tested negative two months ago. I'm still short of breath on a regular basis. Sometimes my coughing fits are so bad that I puke.
I'm told this might go away next month, next year or never.

My best guess on that is the prevalence of xenophobic and racists sh--holes willing and eager to elect sh--hole leaders like Trump who are determined to characterize nations populated and governed by non-white majorities as sh--hole countries.

It's hard to write this disingenuously when there are countries that have followed sound medical advice / social policy who are in significantly better economic shape than the US is because, and this crazy, a plague ripping through society is bad for economic activity.
