If so, your concerns my be irrelevant to whether or not God is a loving and merciful God.

How do you interpret the idea that
the Lord does “nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.”
Remember there are two sides to the question I put before you. Guess which side has applicability to your concern?

I’ll put it up again:

God might have a different modus operandi for revelation when it some to individuals vs. prophets and geopolitical politics and their outcomes.

Would you consider the earthquake which happened yesterday to be something God did, or something that was outside of his control?

Are we discussing plate tectonics or revelation from God?

We're discussing prophets ability to see around corners, which means to warn people about future events. We have an example from Sheri Dew where a prophet supposedly had the foresight to warn people about rising interest rates for their home mortgages.

It's pretty clear that when it comes to more important matters, like say a global pandemic or a catastrophic earthquake, God works under a different modus operandi.

One explanation might be that God does not have the ability to forecast the activity of plate tectonics. I think this might be a uniquely Mormon doctrine, because in every other Christian religion God is the ultimate cause of everything in the Universe. Only within Mormonism's polytheism, where our God is a limited exalted human, and one of many Gods, does that make sense.

The inspiration Sheri Dew received, it should be kept in mind, was for/to her as an individual. And again I would propose that revelation that comes to individuals may be handled differently by God than the revelation that may be and/or is given through prophets.

I don't think that's the message she was conveying:
all because I had followed a prophet’s counsel ten years earlier. Prophets help us see around corners
She wasn't talking about personal revelation, her talk was about prophets seeing around corners. The prophet saw around the corner and she followed.

Importance takes on a different gradation of meanings when we are thinking about different things. Mortgage rates and the impact that this would have on Sheri’s future decisions and opportunities were very important to her at the time.

Widespread destruction and death is unfortunate and sad. The question would be does God have a different modus operandi in these MANY instances than he does when working with individuals?

I think He may.

Plate tectonics are an inbuilt system to the operations of the earth and life upon it. Is God to reveal every time the natural world is going to do what it does as a part of its natural operations?

By the way, I would HIGHLY recommend listening to Sheri Dew’s talk. It’s actuall one of the best talks I’ve ever listened to anywhere anytime.

As I mentioned over on another thread, I think it was this one:

viewtopic.php?f=4&t=157015

It’s important that the right questions are being asked. I’m proposing that this is the case in this instance.

President Gordon B. Hinckley gave her personal revelation at General Conference in 1998? Cool.

Seems like a strange venue, broadcasting to the entire church, in order to give someone personal revelation.

Can you see how her words might be interpreted otherwise given the title of her talk and context?
