Robert has been focused on Dan McClellan lately. For good reason. The stark contrast between Boylan and McClellan couldn’t be stronger. Dan is a real scholar producing real valuable work. Bobby is still in his bedroom playing with playdough.

I decided to go read some of Boylan’s work based on this thread as I’ve never heard of him before.

Dude is an expert in logical fallacy and quote mining. That and screaming for formal debates with people when he gets blown out of the water with blogposts and social media comments.

I've read some of Boylan's writings, and found myself quite unimpressed. I seem to recall a whole lot of question begging.

Of course, it may well be that I'm not smart enough to appreciate his intellect. As I get older, this becomes more and more likely.

Dear lord, Bobby’s videos have become comically bad. I started at 55:00 in and it’s a complete crap show lol.
I don't know much about this Boylan fellow you're all dissing in this thread, but I do know that the person he had on, Kent Jackson, is a respected scholar that spent his career at BYU although I don't think he had the beard while there. :)

Through your link I am now aware of the following website:

https://www.youtube.com/@churchhistorym ... ast/videos

That looks like one to bookmark.

As for the books in back of Kent Jackson...any of you have a bookshelf full of books like that and can make the claim to be a scholar in the same class as Br. Jackson?

Time for cut and paste, show us pictures of your bookshelves! Prove that you're not the 'toss in a corner' kind of person that Boylan is. Show you're a real man, like Kent Jackson. For you women, this applies to you also. ;) If you can show your bookshelves...maybe you can also make a claim to be a scholar!

Everything worked right in the video up until 55:00 minutes. There were some technical problems at that point. I don't know why you would call the presentation before that a "complete crap show"???

Regards,
MG

Yeah. Wow. Gee whiz. There must be 200 books there. Can you imagine that? Two hundred books. How could anyone ever have 200 books? I'm sure no one here has 200 books.

Score one for MG.

Really hard to say, right? Without proof anyway. Kent Jackson's got the proof. Boylan's got the proof. All I'm asking is, where's yours?

I'm saying this more or less as a tease. Don't take me too seriously on this one Morley.

We have a bunch of folks on this board (you?) that come across as scholars of the same class/kind as Kent Jackson whom drumdude referred to as part (main part) of a "crap" video. If you listen to it, is is rather obvious that drumdude and others were sort of riffing on Boylan as basically a fool without ever attempting to interact with the actual content of the video which was mainly ALL Kent Jackson.

I just found that interesting.

That's all.

Scholarship isn't measured by books on bookshelves, it's measured by things like books published with academic presses and peer-reviewed articles.

No one here would deny Kent P. Jackson is a legitimate scholar of religion and ancient studies. He has peer-reviewed publications, including with journals that aren't predominantly BYU / LDS apologetics journals.

Boylan has two book reviews and one research note, both with journals that predominantly produce LDS apologetics. He puts out a vast amount of content, but it's all self-publishing or self-promotion. He tries to present himself as extremely knowledgeable and a scholar, but hasn't done the professional work to support that claim.

I personally think he's intelligent and probably capable of real scholarship, but he seems emotionally unbalanced, and his online antics and lack of professionalism hurt his credibility.
