What is telling is that we haven't see the large scale rioting, looting, property destruction and killing that we saw after the death of George Floyd.Kishkumen wrote: ↑Tue Sep 16, 2025 2:23 pmThat is my concern. I think it is very telling that the firing of those who say anything slightly off about Charlie Kirk is celebrated, while those right-wing figures who irresponsibly called for war against Democrats after Kirk's death don't even raise an eyebrow of disapproval. It seems pretty clear to me that for the Right this is about power, not about decorum.

And when the Confederates saw Jackson standing fearless like a stonewall, the army of Northern Virginia took courage and drove the federal army off their land.

You remind me of why I don’t waste time on X. What a cesspool of hatred that place is.

Are you claiming that law enforcement killed Charlie Kirk?
Evidence please! Pretty sure law enforcement had nothing to do with Charlie Kirk’s death.

What professions are exempt from the natural consequences of celebrating the accuracy of an assassin's bullet?
So far, it appears that tenured professors are entitled to that exemption. What about small business owners like cake bakers? LEO's? News anchors?
I believe any and all professions have owners and employees that are vulnerable to the consequences of their actions. I respect that this is an unpopular opinion. I equally respect that some people do not consider celebrating the accuracy of an assassin's bullet, depending on the assassinated, to be anything less wholesome than a gender reveal. I disagree, but I believe it.

I think it is manifestly not the case that tenured professors are given any exemption from firing. We have seen them fired for all kinds of speech acts. Professors accused of using insensitive language regarding race, gender, the state of Israel, and now probably the death of Charlie Kirk have been/will be fired. Indeed, I would daresay that professors are under greater scrutiny than just about anyone. Is this not part of the legacy of Charlie Kirk? He did join with lefties in agreeing that professors can engage in offensive speech that should cost them their jobs. The big difference, as I recall, is the definition of unacceptable or offensive speech. For Kirk, it was ideological. For the lefties, it was insensitivity about race, gender, etc.Whiskey wrote: ↑Tue Sep 16, 2025 4:24 pmWhat professions are exempt from the natural consequences of celebrating the accuracy of an assassin's bullet?

I have to wonder why anyone would go to college these days. It seems that in college, especially, no one should have to hear anything that makes them upset. Strange way to explore ideas, if you ask me.

One must wonder, equally, why anyone would become a professor these days. It seems that in college [careers], especially, no one should have to hear [say] anything that makes them upset. Strange way to explore ideas, if you ask me.
Regarding the original post, let the professors speak and let the consequence follow. In the market of ideas, if a professor wants to applaud the accuracy of an assassin's bullet, and that is popular, well that would be a career enhancing move. Perhaps Kirk's move was the correct move. If you disagree, go to the front of the line and make your case that the assassin's accuracy is to be commended here and in the temples of higher education.

I don't take orders from you, thank heavens. Whoever you are. My position has been made clear on this and other threads. My view on discussing ideas in the university is that there, of all places, people should be able to explore ideas without fear of reprisal. All ideas. The university is not the public square. It is a place set aside to explore ideas. It is for people who are sufficiently mature to do so. Perhaps people who can't handle discussing ideas should not go. Perhaps people who are afraid of ideas that differ from their own ought not to work there or be there.
I say this regardless of anyone's ideology.

I believe you. So in this case, the "idea" that the trajectory of Charlie's assassin's bullet is a cause for applause, is something that should be broadcast without reprisal if it were made by a professor. Further, if a professor is afraid of the idea that an assassin's shot is praised, they are not welcome to work at a university or college, perhaps.Kishkumen wrote: ↑Tue Sep 16, 2025 4:59 pmI don't take orders from you, thank heavens. On the other hand, if the town baker were to celebrate the accuracy of a deadly shot, or a cop, they can expect the FO in FAFO. But not professors?
