Beschloss points to the 1950s, when Dwight D. Eisenhower was president and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev presided over large military parades showing off the latest in Soviet military might. Beschloss says some in the White House approached Eisenhower, himself a decorated military general, suggesting the U.S. do the same, to show off American might.

"Eisenhower said absolutely not, we are the pre-eminent power on Earth," Beschloss says, recalling Eisenhower's response. "For us to try to imitate what the Soviets are doing in Red Square would make us look weak."

You've been around. You know that the guys acting tough, aren't.

Again, you seem to be doing a lot of lifting for the President that he isn't articulating himself. Some of his representatives are putting on touches to the public messaging that is more aware of how bad a look it is to want to wave America's dick around because the President saw the French doing something similar. But the President himself is not asking for this to honor the troops. As I posted above, I'm betting your friend is rightly feeling the vets of our most recent wars are deserving of public recognition. I'd agree that they do. I don't think the evidence is that this is what Trump himself intended. Perhaps it will become this, but the bone spur draft dodger seems to want to be honored. In that light, it seems to be exactly the opposite of what you think it is.

See my last post to Mak...is Shummer equally a Tyrant?

Trump is not the only peter in the pot...heck FDR had a parade with a huge bust of his image on a float in 1942

by the way... https://www.snopes.com/eisenhower-military-parades/

"Both Dwight Eisenhower, a retired five-star Army general, and John F. Kennedy, who served in the Navy in World War II, included weapons in their presidential inauguration parades (Kennedy’s included a nuclear weapon)." (The Atlantic)

If this was Obama it would be a great idea by the Democrats, and the right would say it was wrong...it is just the way our country is now days.

Throwing this on the parade pile. Somewhere in my travels I read or heard that GHWB also held a military parade. Don't know if that's true or what the circumstances were.

Basically, pay me no mind.

Markk - Do you believe there is a meaningful difference between a memorial day parade down mainstreet and these kind of parades?:

If so, what is it?

That's like asking if Obama's rallies were like the links below...are you that desperate. There are plenty of other things to criticize our president for, this is not one of them.

We can have a tasteful parade American style and celebrate and honor our troops. If you are offended by that, don't go, don't support it, and blame it on Trump solely becasue you hate the man and just sit in your basement and pout.

Despite what others think of me here, I really do respect and appreciate our military and would love to take my family to a parade to honor them...parades to me are fun. I love going to the Rose Parade, that is unless USC gets waxed by Wisconsin, then I pout.

Good Jesus. It's just a sport for you, isn't it? Your high school vs the cross town rival.

The president said words that have meaning. It's not some weird tarot reading needed to say, "Hey this idiot isn't talking about honoring the troops. He wants a parade like they had in France only bigger and better." It's what it is, Markk.

So you do see a distinction then? What's the distinction?

The conceit of your posts here is that Trump is requesting another memorial day style parade because what's wrong with another in addition to all the ones we already do? The problem with this conceit is that this is not at all what was being talked about. But until you can admit that not all parades reduce into, "what's wrong with the town getting together and honoring the troops some more?!" it's hard to carry on a conversation.

"what's wrong with the town getting together and honoring the troops some more?!"

It would be a national parade, I never said "some more." It would be no different than other large parades like we did in 91, and I believe the people that would go would have a great time and it would be awesome not only for our military, but ther families.

There is nothing that will happen under this president that you will support, that is just the way it is.

It just shows the hypocrisy here. There is a lot to bash Trump on...this is not one of them.

You're right, Markk. You know far more about military training and readiness than I do. Let's have a parade!

I'll meet you half way, if it turns into a goose stepping type of parade, and not for the folks, I am with you. But Billions?

Trump should be listened to. Remember when he told the Russian guy that he fired Comey to take the pressure off him (Trump)? Sometimes the truth slips out.
