A natural disaster

Hunting has been banned in parts of Austria after freak storms with tennis ball-sized hailstones killed up to 90 per cent of the wild game population.

Hundreds of deer were discovered either dead or so badly injured they had to be put down by wildlife experts.

In the country's rural Salzburg province, 90 per cent of pheasants and 80 per cent of hares were killed in the hail storms.

A blogger asked: Not sure how they could calculate such numbers without knowing the baseline, but it's still a tragedy.

The "From Hell" letter, deemed probably authentic, is a letter posted the 15th of October 1888 by a man who claimed to be the killer known as Jack the Ripper.

The Diving Horses of Atlantic City


The diving horses performed at Atlantic City’s Steel Pier in the 1920s and 1930s. The horse would jump into a tank of water, typically with a young woman riding on its back.

Some dove with their front legs straight out, while others tucked up their legs as if they were going over a jump. One horse would twist in the air and land on his side, making it dangerous for his rider.

‘The riders (all women) would suffer one or two broken bones a year. Most of the injuries came from getting out of the pool of paddling hooves. They made it look easy, but it wasn’t. Years ago a rider by the name of Sonora Carver (in the late 1920’s) went blind from a bad impact with the water. The jump was sixty feet at that time, but was then lowered to forty.

‘Another horse, I think his name was Patches, drew quite an audience. After making so many jumps he no longer waited for his rider. He would charge up the ramp to the tower and take a running jump off the diving board, leaving the rider behind. A couple of the girls tried to leap on him as he flew by, only to be left sailing through the air mount-less.

Origin of Prancing Horse Logo


Francesco Baracca (c. June 1918)

The black prancing horse in the famous Ferrari logo was originally the symbol of Count Francesco Baracca, a flying ace in the Italian air force during World War I.

In 1923, Enzo Ferrari met Baracca's mother, Countess Paolina, who asked that he use the horse on his cars for good luck. It must've worked for Ferrari though Baracca didn't fare so well: his plane was shot down and he was killed in action at the age of 30.

Yesterday, we talked to you about Schwarzenegger's clever missive to Asm. Tom Ammiano, where the governor tossed him a good ol' fashion "Screw you" while informing him that he vetoed his Port of SF bill. SFBG editor Tim Redmond called the governor's press office to ask about the now famous veto message with a little something special. Redmond reports:

Aaron McLear from the governor's press office just called. When I asked him if the Screw you message was intentional, all he would say was "what a strange coincidence." He was clearly being sarcastic.

Tweedle, that pretty much confirms it -- these guys knew exactly what they were doing.

But was is a coincidence? Odds are it wasn't. In fact, Eye On Blogs' Brittney Gilbert says that's the odds are next to impossible. See, an astrophysicist friend of hers tells her, "[T]he odds of this exact message is 1 in 8031810176 (according to my calculations). That doesn't include having a paragraph break where the space is." So, there you have it.
