I guess I may have assumed that the Word of Wisdom was still a very important part of the gospel. I had to go back to an April 2009 conference talk to find anything about it and it barely mentioned much at all about it. I guess I have to accept that it is not a problem and there is no reason for God to reinforce this principle through his church leaders at this time.

What will be the make up of the sample group and the control group of your experiment?

The four major highlights of preparing for this Stake Temple day is fasting, prayer, scripture reading and a new commitment to following the Word of Wisdom.

Yes I am biased in my view on this matter and I hope to soon have some good evidence to support my position.

Okay, it has been one month since I started my experimentation with caffeine. I have consumed caffeine everyday now for about a month. My typical day included (2-3) five hour energy drinks a day. As my previous post mentioned the first experience with caffeine to my body and mind was quite extreme. But being a rookie caffeine drinker I started off too quickly.

But I decided to continue and experiment over the last month and see for myself if I FELT caffeine had a negative influence on my spirituality. I agree with many of you that spirituality can not be measured, and all I could do was record my thoughts and my feelings of what caffeine was doing to me.

What I have concluded (again not scientific but possibly helpful for some): A person will lose some if not most the function of what I call are spirituality receptors (I know I can't prove that they exist) if they partake in caffeine. While a person can go through the temple, pray and fast it appeared to me that as I documented this experiment, I FELT that my ability to feel spiritual had truly been diminished.

Because I have worked with members who are seeking greater spirituality I will continue to suggest a greater commitment to not only the finer details of the Word of Wisdom but to all aspects of living a Mormon life.

5 Hour Energy, pffft. That's your problem you're supposed to get your caffeine in the "package" God put together, not some corporation. Remember this "Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat."? Coffee, tea and chocolate those are the intended ways to consume caffeine.

I'd feel like crap if I drank energy drinks, too.

Especially if you consume 3-5 a day. I don't even do one.

That's a conclusion you already had before you even started. If I felt that eating a certain substance makes me feel bad, I know that if I tested it on myself I would get the result I already wanted. Funny how our minds can give us what we want.

CSA,

Is it your intention to remove all caffeine from your diet or just that which is involved in liquids? Because as I understand the Word of Wisdom and the modern Prophetic counsel on it, it only applies to Tea and Coffee, not caffeine per se.

I have a hard time believing that caffeine in a heated liquid is worse for you either physical or spiritually than in a cold form. It would seem that tea and coffee share a single substance which logically appears to be the substance in which God does not want members to partake of. God may only give us simple rules such as not partaking of tea and coffee, but it very well may be our responsibility to learn how to live a higher law and gain greater spirituality.

In response to my question - Is that a yes or a no?

I will have chocolate on some special occasions, but for the most part, no caffeine for me. Except for the few times I eat chocolate and my month long experiment, I am caffeine free.
