Too late. Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow keeps pounding the point that the whistle blower's claim is just hearsay and the President has the authority to classify and declassify anything he wants.

Just so anyone reading this knows, the controlling order surrounding the code-word level classification system that they were using specifically forbids using it to conceal embarrassing or politically sensitive information. What Trump and those carrying out his orders were doing was in violation of this.

This sort of abuse of office is literally what constitutes a "high crime and misdemeanor," but it's also a violation of the legal system in place.

This is very useful information, but could you provide a source for this please?

Sure:

The President was abusing the classification system contrary to governing policy in order to conceal information, including impeachable conduct. It shouldn't be surprising, but credible reports indicate this involved heretofore unknown conversations with Russia and Saudi Arabia.

This is 5-alarm fire bad.

As EA points out you can't just classify anything you want as Top Secret/SCI//PresidentTrumpSaysSo. There are criteria that must be met in order for information to be classified as so sensitive that only a very few select members of the government can have access to it. In this case, what Trump is doing is essentially creating a Special Access Program to shield his conversations with the Saudis, Russians, and anything else that can be viewed as politically damaging.

The whole point of the classification apparatus, whistleblower program, and oversight agencies is to ensure that things like this aren't happening, so that our democracy isn't subverted from within by a shadow government; the deep state. A democracy, in order to survive, must be as transparent as possible, and these measures that are in place exist to ensure people can check one another against their behavior. If we don't have accountability our government is done. It's over. And we can't have that, no matter who the person is. This is why I thought Hillary should've been charged with at least something for conducting government business on a private server. While she was investigated by Comey, the lack of any charges, or at the very least that she didn't lose her security clearance, was a problem for me. Though, it should be noted it was suspended while they looked into her activities, I think, at her request.

by the way, there’s apparently another whistleblower complaint ref Trump’s tax returns:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions ... story.html

My takeaway, and perhaps someone can set me straight if I’m wrong, is that Congress could get Trump’s tax returns simply because they can. Why it hasn’t happened before is a mystery to me, though.

Neal requested the returns under the statute. The administration refused. Neal sued to get them. What else should he have done to avoid being a doormat?

I think we know about the complaint because it was raised in the lawsuit. Normally, whistleblower complaints aren’t made public, as it’s hard to protect the whistleblower’s identity once the media is involved.
