I say yes, particularly if it's done to people who died for their religious beliefs or identify (Holocaust victims).

Well, from the outside looking in, I would say that many of us look at it as a complete misreading of 1 Cor 15:29.
1 Cor 15 has to be taken in context, and, as such, indicates that the practice of "baptism for the dead" was not practiced by Paul or those he helped convert, but by fringe groups whom he uses as an argument for the resurrection.
A whole church practice and ordinance from reading something into it that isn't there.
