Sometimes I don't know whether to laugh or cry with th critics complaints. But this one made me laugh. I suppose that the church should only build small log buildings that fit 12 people. I suppose that this may be humble enough but not very practical. As the LDS church grows, buildings will need to accomodate the need. It is as simple as that.
Really, critics, you need to get a life and stop moaning about buildings and malls. And if the critic is out of the church, why should that critic care how money is spent?

My kids will never qualify for a church sponsered university. I have yet to understand why I should feel comfortable seeing tithes go to benefit an inordinate amount of rich Mormon parent's children.
As a TBM, I never shorted this program. Although I've never felt well about what they've done with the money donated by the poor.
I have trouble agreeing with tithing spent on "the kingdom of God" - represented by buildings where most of the attendants are neither lacking in food or shelter.
Fast Offering:A Request Is not a requirement for a temple recommend. These are funds dispersed by the church to benefit those less fortunate
This is where my entire "charitable contribution" now goes toward. Specifically to the "Humanitarian Fund" - to keep it as far from lazy ward members as I possibly can.
Hinkley is not even dead yet.
I think that you will find that BYU is not just for rich children but money is also spent on scholarships and the like. Also, BYU is not exactly Harvard in tuition costs. I htink that your complaint is unfounded. I see no elitism at BYU.

hilarious. guess what was waiting for me on my workbench today when I got home? It's the vision of Zion come true, the worker drones buzzing around in a flurry as if they were trying to complete the Death Star. "Those workers understood the value of honoring President Hinckley" All is in honor of Lord Hinckley, "No one...wanted to be the one who had to say, 'I didn't get my doors hung, so we couldn't have the dedication on the prophet's birthday." Of course not! That guy would be the Admiral Mottie of LDS contractors, and the only thing Hinckley would be left to say, before ending that man's career, would be, "I find your lack of faith disturbing."
LOL!
For those of you who don't seem to get my point, I invite you to reread Gadianton's comments, which summed them up so well. I don't resent the church building buildings. And it's not even resentment since it didn't cost me one dime. It's amusement. Amusement at the image of the modern LDS church becoming the great and spacious building. When the LDS church gave up polygamy, and decided to go whole-hog into buying their ticket into mainstream America, it sealed its fate. It's building MALLS, for heaven's sake, and glorious buildings to name after their leaders. LOL!!!
Next on the agenda - a gold plated statue worthy of the man!!!! Or heck, the LDS church can make it PURE gold!!

We hate to seem like we don’t trust every nut with a story, but there’s evidence we can point to, and dance while shouting taunting phrases.

Is not "it's money" the funds of the people? Surplus value doesn't appear out of thin air...

It's a nice building, but it's not extravagant and it was very much needed. It will be well used. I'm sorry that its construction has so offended a person who presumably contributed nothing to it. Life is like that, though.
What was the funding source for this building?
So it's built with alumni funds, not tithing? If so, I have no objection to this building. BYU alumni have the same freedom to do whatever they want with their donations.
Cuz the majority never leave happy friggin valley. And why would BYU alumni need such a large facility?
Where the majority of alumni live is not a worrisome thing to me. I don't see why it is a problem for you, PP.

What the church does with it's [tithes and offerings] money is a legit issue for discussion. What a private group (BYU alumni) does with it's private money is up to them. If they want to build a building on BYU's campus with private donations, and name it after a non-alumni, I have no objection. It's their money and they can do with it what they want.
However the church does not equal BYU alumni.

The differentiation between money source is a good point, but given the control the church has over BYU, I think it's fair to overlap the two.

So the original critic on this thread was slightly off the mark because the money does not come from tithing. At times I do feel that critics should not give knee jerk responses or complaints about the LDS church until they investigate all the facts. In this case, there is no case against the church.
Next critic issue?

I am having a hard time absorbing this one. Giving to unknown others is fine, but to those you know is not? Is the underlying assumption that those in need are by your definition lazy?
