The LDS Church desperately wants to be included among "Christian" churches and whines that other denominations don't get to define what "Christian" is, but the Church also wants to define what "Mormonism" is such that the CoC, the Strangites, Bickeronites, FLDS, Nephite Church of Christ, etc., all of whom believe in Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon, aren't "Mormons."
It does not matter what he knows or does not know about the "larger Mormon movement." He believes, as do I, that the only Mormons are those members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Likewise, it would not matter if another sect which claims to be "real Mormons" said something to the effect of: "Polygamy is true doctrine and anyone who doesn't practice it is not a true Mormon." For them, that
is true doctrine. For us, it is not.
