For the record, I did a blog post that kind of touched on this issue: Baptizing My Baby. Among other things, I argued that I think 8 is too young to choose a religion, using some of the references that Jersey Girl provided on this fine forum.
The responses I got from readers were interesting. Some acknowledged that the church probably baptizes children at 8 precisely because, if they waited longer, more children would probably say "no."
