CNN clips are hard to track down. I had no idea. I tried to hunt down some RT-OT threads I participated on where there would be links, but everything is dead. Atheists face pervasive discrimination in America. Some of it is in the open - like plastered across billboards open -, but some of it is more subtle, like the almost universal unelectablity of atheists. But it is so pervasive and nonviolent that I think it's easy to just take it for granted as that's the way it is and will be. You could spend each day every day just reading about barely paid attention to stories wherein atheists are treated in ways that would be explosive if Christians faced the same treatment. I did find a bunch of MB conversations over those kind of stories.

Remember that? Yeah, no one else does either. If that happened to a Christian, people would talk about it to this day. As it stands, it's a dime a dozen story.

I found one. I recently read "Where Men Win Glory" by Jon Krakauer, about Pat Tillman and the government coverup of his death in Afghanistan. There were about a half dozen investigations that took place only because of pressure from Pat's family who wanted somebody to be held accountable for the killing and the high level of propaganda and coverup that followed. One of the military investigators, and evangelical, who apparently did his job grudgingly, was quoted in an interview providing speculation about why the Tillman family was so determined to have justice:

Those that are Christians can come to terms with faith and the fact that there is an afterlife, heaven, or whatnot.

If you are an atheist and you don't believe in anything, if you die what is there to go to? Nothing. You're worm dirt.

I'm not really sure what they [the Tillmans] believe or how they can get their head around death. So in my personal opinion, sir, that is why I don't think they'll ever be satisfied.

A rather crass way to excuse the guilty Christian and blame the atheist victim. "Boo hoo! Who cares? Let Jesus sort it out."

When gays are recognized they are removed from the Temple Films. Wonder if l-dsinc hired old soviet propaganda photo techs to do it for them?

I'm more ashamed to admit to TBMs my spiritual experiences with Athena than I am with my experiments in atheism. Last night, my old mission comp asked if I have been praying. I said I have and I have been given very powerful confirmations, similar to when I was believing. He asked, "You prayed to ask if the Book of Mormon is false?" I said no but I didn't dare tell him what I really prayed about and who I prayed to. I realized all of a sudden that I might just be persecuted for my pagan beliefs. So he left my house thinking I have no regard for the divine at all. he thinks I just cast it all to the wind because I didn't dare tell him everything.

I wonder what America would detest more: Atheists or Pagans?

I think if pagans were more visible they'd be just as hated as atheists. I don't think many people give much thought to pagans anymore.

A rather inaccurate way to paraphrase what he said. But don't let accuracy stop you from making a point.

Buff,

I have a feeling the two groups of people you mentioned in the OP give many people fear. Do you think your typical, older generation Mormon conservative fears atheists and gays more than Muslims?

I'd say Muslims and gays are probably what scares them the most, but they probably hate gays and atheists more than Muslims.

No joke. Intellectually, I get why they use the term, but it's still hilariously wrong.

Atheists really are despised in America in a way that is astounding when you peel back what is so easy to take for granted. Much more so than groups we tend to think of as having oppressed minority status, like gays or Muslims. If I have time, I'll pull up some CNN straight news clips talking about atheists as if the term was on par with child molester.

I haven't heard the term secular humanist in my circles for years. Certainly more than ten. you might be confusing our tendency to not vote for an atheist with hatred. We don't vote for people for a lot of reasons, only one of which is atheism. And even then, it's not many who take that stance.

I simply have no idea of what you're talking about. I have not witnessed, been a part of, nor know of anyone who would treat an atheist any different than anyone else. If anything, we would treat you with MORE kindness, not less, as our "great commission" dictates that we do so. Certainly there are exceptions - like the Westboro Baptist Church folks - who self identify as democrats, by the way.

On average, atheists are smarter than theists. Of course, some will be on the low end of bell curve, even so.

Do you also despise theists who misquote and who are "vapid, pretentious morons"?
