I appreciate the kind words, Seth, I mean about my brain cells and everything.

Maybe it is just a waste of time and energy, after all.

But then, any other problem I put my brain cells to work on solving would likely be a waste, as well.

At least I have some fun in the process.

Well, I was thinking about my post after I posted it, and I think I came across a little too harshly. Sure, you do this because it's fun, it comes naturally to you, and it fulfills some need for you. I probably wouldn't be too far beyond the pale to call this mental masturbation. And I wouldn't even be slamming you for it, because I have no problem with masturbation, mental or otherwise. Like I said, it's natural, it's fun, and it fills some need for you, so knock yourself out.

I will readily admit that the Church's longstanding focus on the centrality of "the Book of Mormon is TRUE" as the first and most important issue has made it harder for me to appreciate an effort like yours from the OP, for one really good reason: your OP doesn't really move that argument either way. On the surface it would even seem to someone like me to be an apologetic attempt to defang a particular criticism of the Book of Mormon - that the "Nephi murders Laban" story runs counter to the notion that a good and loving God would have inspired a book like the Book of Mormon.

So, please pardon me for my anti-apologetic knee-jerk reaction to your OP. As an example of a creative human mind creating a sequence of dots to connect out of a literary work, and making lemonade out of a lemon, I think your OP is a good example.
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen

Consig,

If I were a SS teacher (wouldn't that be the day?), I would ask all my little students the following question:

What the hell would you do if you were in Nephi's shoes? We will spend the remaining 40 minutes discussing alternatives to cutting off Laban's head in order to get the plates. Here is a pencil and paper. Your idea must not involve cutting heads. I encourage imaginative solutions. Next Sunday, I will present the 5 best solutions and the first place winner gets a Starbucks gift card.

Good luck!

Are we sure that Nephi didn't slay Laban for a pack of Huggies and whatever cash he had?

I want you to know, Seth, that based on my previous interactions with you, I attributed only the best of intentions to your first post.

You are a good guy.

Thanks for clarifying, just the same.

All the Best!

You mean Nephi "rolled" Laban?

I love it!

I like your question and your approach to the situation from a moral perspective, Zeez.

I also like Ben McGuire's analysis of the story which concludes the text is structured in this way intentionally to draw upon David's slaying of Goliath, with the take-away message that Nephi, like David, has been chosen by God to be the legitimate king over the Nephites.

Thanks for sharing that, Consig. I feel the Laban story is a way to give the Book that old, crusty feel. You know, to make it sort of Old Testamenty like. This is also why Ether was put in there. Now that story really has an Old Testamenty flavor to it with all the begats this and that business.

I like it. As a matter of fact, I think you could extend the concept to include Alma and Korihor, who suffered similar experiences, though with differing outcomes.

"Inside the Mind of Joseph Smith"? And perhaps others as well.

Well he was stumble bum falling down drunk. I think the same end result could have been had by tying him up and taking his clothes, rather than relieving him of his head. But what do I know? Maybe they were short on rope, or sashes, or belts.... or........................................ sandal laces............................................................ dang it is really hard to be short of something to hog tie a drunk with.

I am now proposing that when the sons of Lehi went to Jerusalem to retrieve the plates they did so stark naked.
