I think the left line of that cake says, "Congratulations."

Though my Japanese is so rusty I can't make out the right (and first) line.

It looks like o-tanji hatsubi.

Is that anything like tanjobi?

What do you make of it, Dr. Shades?

And Happy Birthday, by the way.

All the Best!

Anata no tomodachi,

It just says おたんじょうび Kana by kana: O ta n ji yo u bi ([your] birthday)

and the second line is as you say おめでとう O me de to u (congratulations)

No, I didn't serve a mission ...

You are brilliant, nonetheless.

I was misreading the cake.

I have lost face.

It's sepuku time.

All the Best!

Wow, you speak Japanese too? Did I already know that? Tarski and I went to the same mission, as luck would have it.

As an aside, that's not me in my avatar, of course. That's Alodia Gosiengfiao. Click here for more.

Don't worry, it does. :-)

Like that sentence? :-)

Yep. "Omedetō."

Though my Japanese is so rusty I can't make out the right (and first) line.

It looks like o-tanji hatsubi.

I'm afraid not.

Is that anything like tanjobi?

It says "O-Tanjōbi." You're mistaking the little "よ" for a "は." The cake artist simply drew the upper "dash" of the hiragana "う" a little too close to the small "よ" (it should've been below it, not next to it).

So, are you a fellow Japan RM? And did I forget that, too?

To everyone else:

THANK YOU, each and every one of you, for the kind wishes!

But if you lose face in this encounter, so do I ... so let's just pretend none of this happened. Yes, that would be best, wouldn't it?

Thank you for explaining why it is I misread the hiragana. I would have said that myself, but one who is losing face should not seek to justify self.

And yes!

I went to the Kobe mission in 1979 and came home from the Osaka mission in 1981.

I was able to ride the shinkansen to Tokyo for the dedication of the temple in October of 1980.

President Kimball was there (with Arthur Haycock always by his side) as well as Elder Peterson.

I remember after the dedication (which took place in an auditorium some distance away from the actual temple) watching the general authorities ride away in a luxury bus with a big purple Playboy bunny symbol on the side.

It was a pure slice of Japanese culture.

Yoroshiku o-negai shimasu!

Many happy returns of the day, Shades!

You do provide a vital service to us all. If I haven't expressed it before, thanks so much for all you do. I think you are often under appreciated.

I won't ask how old you are. If you're like me, you will have stopped counting.

Thanks once again,

Rob
