Unfortunately, it does seem that DCP has made a deliberate choice to show a different side of himself online. I am sure he is intelligent enough not to complain when people take the online DCP on his own terms.

I don't think his reluctance to not complain when people take the online DCP on his own terms has to do with intelligence, but rather human nature: the difficulty we all have in recognizing our own bad behavior, even when it's the same behavior we easily see and decry in others.

I think there are many non-believers here who feel bad for Dan, but I agree with LostinDC that we should be kind.

It seems quite telling that Bradford desires someone more in line with mainstream Mormon studies to fill Dan Peterson's spot. I don't know how many people here have experience participating in such circles (I know several participants here do)... but my experience has been that a growing diversity is found within them, and that for the most part people are very friendly, open minded, respectful, and cordial with one another. I suspect that the "powers-that-be" are extremely pleased by the progress of Mormon Studies in this regard, and have noticed this as a stark contrast against the "old boys" way of apologetics--and that this has (in part) encouraged the upcoming changes within the Maxwell institute (assuming that the reports are true).

I guess my point is this: antagonism is the environment where the "old boy" antics have thrived--it has been the terrain they've battled in for decades. We give Midgly, Hamblin, Peterson, Pahoran, Schriver, et al... relevance by being assholes to them and to the rest of Mormondom. Be kind, and the "old boys" are fish out of water--forced to adapt/evolve, or parish into irrelevancy.

We can also try to be kinder simply because it is the right thing to do. No doubt, I have been guilty of antagonistic debates too, but I am trying to repent and change my ways.

I told Dan many times to stay away from the boards and let his persona die down. But he did not listen. Now he has a wonderful opportunity to drift away into the unknown. Even Scratch's informant is not out of a job. And that is a good thing. Reading Scratch's threads were basically stalking a person with an informant spying on dan's every move. Kinda creepy.

It shows the intent of the posters here since the majority never called scratch on it.
